I thought I would start a new thread on riding the Colorado BDR. I posted about riding it in the Colorado meet thread but not sure how many saw it and its buried now. I plan on coming to the meet and being in Ouray Monday June 24th and staying thru Friday the 28th. Then finish riding the BDR. The Colorado BDR is 675 miles of backcountry roads it starts in Four Corners and ends at the WY border just east of Slater. Touratech and Butler maps sell DVDs of the making of the route and the maps. The GPS tracks are on the web site for free. The web site is www.Backcountrydiscoveryroutes.com. I enjoyed watching the video and naturally it makes you want to ride it even more. The maps that Butler make are great, vinyl and chock full of information, the route is highlighted well. On the back of the map sections have exploded views showing easier work arounds or hazards or points of interest. They break the ride down to six days. There is a good FAQ section on the web site with lots of good information.

Section one: Four Corners to Telluride= 128 miles Groundhog reservoir, Groundhog Mtn,Fall creek rd.

Section two:Telluride to Lake city=64.6 miles Day 2 is a big day Ophir pass,Red mtn. pass,Corkscrew pass,Hurricane pass,California pass,Animas forks, Cinnimon pass then Lake City.

These first 2 sections could be ridden the week of the rally and if you don't want to ride the whole BDR I recommend you ride these, they are so close to Ouray and look like great rides.Saturday the 29th leave Ouray and ride to Lake City. There are 3 different routes just take the one you haven't ridden.

Sunday June 30th start section three
Section three:Lake City to Buena Vista 144 miles Slugmillion pass,Los Pinos pass,Wanitua pass,Cumberland pass, Cottonwood pass. Buena Vista is Probably the biggest town you go through. Bueni and Salida are two of my favorite Colorado small towns friendly people and good places to eat.

Monday July 1st
Section four: Buena Vista to Gypsum 136 miles
Weston pass, Leadville,Turquoise Lake, Haggerman pass

Tuesday July 2nd
Section five: Gypsum to Steamboat springs 121 miles
Colorado River road,Statebridge,Lynx pass, Stagechoach reservior,Lake Catamount

Wednesday July 3rd
Section six: Steamboat springs to WY border 104 miles
Mystic, Elk river rd. Clark,Three Forks ranch

Just west on Hwy 70 is the small town of Dixon,WY. They have a Hotel and also a Bar. The bar serves food too. I've stayed there before and it was neat. Just a little west of Dixon is Baggs.
Should be able to finish up the BDR Wed. the 3rd. That would give you four travel days to get back home if you have to go back to work the 8th of July. There is fuel at every end stopping point but we shouldn't have that trouble. If you don't feel like camping there should be lodging at all of the stops.I know there is hotels in Bueni and Steamboat not real sure about Gypsum. I plan on camping but would take a dry bed over a wet camp. If this sounds interesting to you let me know, Two others have shown interest but not commited. I intend to ride it solo if need be but would enjoy it much better with some company. Reply or Pm if you like or be sure to come find me at the meet. This is set to be a great summer getaway. See ya soon Mark

Limey I'm keeping my fingers crossed! You know the scenery will be EPIC

The men who put the BDRs together all say the Colorado route is the best ride they have made so far. How could it not be? Colorado is so beautiful, really glad our meet is there this year.

After doing sections of just Washington BDR, I would say give yourself more time than the TouraTech guys say it can be done. If you are going to be ripping along fast all day long, then it can be done. Just my observation of just WA BDR as being the easiest.
