Hi Guys,

I'm from SoCal and im in the process of getting an FZ09. I have already put down a deposit 2 months ago and still waiting for the bike to arrive at the dealership. Then it hit me, that bike wouldnt be a very good choice for long rides / cross country , which I will eventually do a few months down the road. I looked at cruisers and other flavors and then came across adventure bikes. I read about the GS and Vstrom which are pretty common in the summer here in AK ( I work alternately in Ak and CA every other month) The GS1200 is pretty popular but heard maintenance dept (not to mention the OTD price) Then I saw the S10 and liked it, value for money wise. I decided I am going to get it and ditch the FZ09.

I am looking at the prices of the S10 and they have significantly dropped specially the '12s. Is there any major difference between the '12 and the '13? Have you guys ever had any major problem with yours bikes? Advice/suggestions/information will be greatly appreciated.

thanks!

Colors are about the only change between years, As for major problems, they are pretty bulletproof, only problem is the grin on your face when riding...

Hi Omar,

I've heard rumor there aren't a lot of '12s left on the floor new, as they're trying to move them for the "updated" '14 model. The '13s difference is simply color - instead of blue/black in '12, you get matte gray/white. That's it.

The only common issue that folks have run into is the headlight connector melting, causing the headlight to go out. The fix is really simple, just file the connector down so the terminal power connectors seat in further.

Rock solid yamaha reliability, otherwise.

The only problem with my Tenere is I don't get to ride it enough. In May I will be riding it to New York in Don Emde's Cannon Ball Baker run. I can't think of a more comfortable bike to ride. I guess Yamaha has stepped up and is helping out with the event. Emde and his partner will now be riding Super Teneres too. I think when they saw Ralph White and I on Yamaha's, they decided to dump the KTM's.

I would agree completely.

Having owned a Tenere since they came out and having spent time on an FZ09 just last week, I'd tend to agree with you: you'll not be a happy camper doing distance on the FZ, but it is a great backroad/suburban commando/urban bike. I really like how light and narrow it is, but I could tell by my 45 minute ride that by the time it sucked the tank dry, I'd be done for the day. The Tenere is a completely different beast, and it has something the FZ does not: a seat that you don't have to replace the day after you pick up the bike. And oddly, better fuel mileage, plus a much larger tank and greater range.

I'd pick up the cheapest model you like the color of, and buy an extended warranty, and be a much happier person.

I'd pick a Blue '12 or a White '13, but that's just me. Get a FendaExtenda for the front. If you're going off road, get a bash plate immediately.

And then, later on, when you find an FZ09 used because the new owner couldn't go any great distance on it, pick it up too. The tenere is almost twice the price, but it is over twice the bike. On the FZ09, you're buying the engine and frame, they're giving you the suspension and wheels.

You may want to wait to see what will change on the 2014. Announcement expected in November.

Many find the fueling/engine management on the current model to be less then ideal. Solution is to have the ECU reflashed ...... $450.00.

Regards, Paul

Welcome on, Omar. The Tenere is an awesome motorsickel. Just awesome. You won't regret it. 2014 models are due to be announced on Nov. 4, I think. But they will likely be pricey.

The truth is that the Matt Grey 13 model is worth about 63% more than the Black 12 model, but there are some out there that would argue with that fact. ;)

I had my mind set on picking up a FZ 09 too, until I sat on a S10 thats all it took. Found a great deal on a 13 grey (fastest model out) and been impressed every day since. The torque is crazy, she just pulls and pulls.

the FZ would not be a good 'all around bike'
The ST is.

That said, I put a deposit down on a gray FZ, as my shits and giggles bike.
Having owned the fastest model (blue of course) I have no regrets with the bike.
It does it all.
Wait till the middle of November, and buy either leftover stock, or what they decide on in 2014. Either way you cannot go wrong with the ST.

you can read various articles of hate mail that I put together here: http://thetenerist.wordpress.com/

I've seen some 2013's going for 12K + tax (or less). There are also some real low milage units with a lot of farkles in the 10K range.

If you feel like it's a good deal, it is...(spoken from someone with 15 years in the car biz) ... If you plan on keeping it for a long time, it's not like you can really go wrong with this bike.

Having said that, if you are willing to do the legwork of looking around and maybe traveling a little bit you could probably find a lower price. Question is, what's your time worth, and will the dealer possibly price-match a lower price you find to keep your business local?

Depends. Some guys include all taxes and fees when they say OTD, others just include price to get it OTD of the dealer not including state taxes and license. If that prices includes all taxes and fees, I would say that it is a good price. For sure the 4 year YES price they quoted you is a good price for that.

Indeed. They certainly aren't trying to hit you on the back side of the deal..
