Unless you get in an area with no cell service, which happens to be at least 50% of the areas I ride. GPS and SPOT are a necessity in remote areas

OsmAnd+ is true GPS and completely offline. Actually you can even download Google maps now to your phone and use it in GPS offline mode also.

Over the past 2-3 years I have came very close to spending big bucks on a Garmin Montana. So glad I didn't as I much prefer using my phone; OsmAnd for tracks and Google for on the fly navigation. Better for me in most every way than the Garmin.

A friend is running a 9" Nexus tablet with OSMAND and makes routes in Basecamp and loads then and just loves it. Every time we stop he says come look here at this rroad or these roads... lets go try them. ::008:: It shows so much more than a Garmin GPS. I too may get it. It takes a fair amount of time on the computer to "get the hang of it"! AND you need a good speed internet to download the maps and I don't have that internet speed... so I would just do it over night like it do for the Garmin maps.

I may end up going this way too. Less than $200 including a nice mount! ::021::

How does nonsense like this keep coming up. ::002::

Modern phones have GPS receivers that are independent of cellular connection.
There are many apps that have offline maps that don't need data except to initially load them.. do that with WiFi before you leave.

On my trip to west Texas and New Mexico, I used my old Galaxy S4 active for my GPS and I don't have a sim card in it anymore. Osmand+ with OSM maps for navigation and downloaded Amazon Prime music to listen to on the boring highway parts. Worked flawlessly.

I was not aware I could do it off line, always used a map or standalone Sat Nav unit, and because of this forum I now know, will I ever use that? Probably not, but good to know, so thanks ::008::

Here is a truly "ONLY GPS" app for android phones (Google Play). Navmii GPS USA (Navfree) and it can be used while the phone is in Airplane Mode, meaning that data and phone do not need to be on, only the GPS on your android. I used this app to drive around Italy a couple of years ago. Awesome app that you just need to get used to using. It is free though I do remember there was a paid feature to get additional maps of states or regions. Hope this helps...

My current favorite is Here Maps. It is free and does offline navigation well.

I didn't see any insults and usually consider myself to be the person last in what everybody else is talking about.
fwiw Brick - I was joking.

Hey - if this is the worst we got, we are doing pretty good.
