I'm ST Curious. I've ridden 2 V-Stroms over 80k miles. The V-Strom 1000 doesn't excite me at all, and I'd like a machine a little bigger for long hauls.

Apparently Yamaha has liquidated a number of 2019, low mile, Demo bikes... I can find 4 in a 300 mile radius. One claims to be a CA - or have California emissions stuff.

Is that a bother? any parts difference? performance difference?

Thanks,
Scott

They'll have cats, but a lot of guys have removed them with aftermarket exhausts. I don't think there's any differences between Teneres other than the usual Gen I/II things. I say if they're selling them cheap, grab one.

They aren't selling cheap - but reasonably priced. I'm pondering a lot of things - but private seller seems to be the best option. Stupid dealer fees and three hours of "No, I do not want an extended warranty" make me just wanna go easy!

At least ride one. That'll help you decide how much effort you want to put into it. She's my favorite bike ever.

Absolutely - the local shop is a complete bunch of morons with elitist attitudes. I called with cash in hand and they wont let me test ride. WTF? I'll find a way!

besides the CAT, if it is like CA cars it should have a vapor recovery set up.

do not trash can the CAT. The internal bricks are worth a few shekels

Honestly, I wouldn't think Yamaha would be different then other manufacturers and Cats would be on the bike regardless of Cali or non Cali.... Theyve all incorporated Cats and computer controls into all the late model FI bikes

The difference between Cali and non Cali bikes from manufacturers on late model bikes is regarding EVAP. They put a gas vapor recovery system on the Cali bikes (vapor recovery hoses, purge solenoid and charcoal canister). Not a big deal at all just stores the gas vapors and burns em vs dumping to the atmosphere. A little extra weight, but really on a bike like the S10 it doesn't matter.

That said, the S10 is a really hard bike to find used (at least in Cali).... BUT all dealers are adding ridiculous fees to bike sales new and used. I can guarantee you that demo will go full retail and the usual $650 minimum used bike (prep lol) turnover. I'd personally wait for used private party, but if you "gotta have it", I get it.

I'm still wondering why they're not demo-ing the demos. :(
The conversation went like this.
Me: I would like to test ride the Super Tenere
MMS: We only do that by appointment.
Me: I'd like an appointment.
MMS: We have limited availability.
Me: How about noon?
MMS: Okay.
MMS: Do you have a trade in?
Me: Maybe - I haven't decided if I want to trade it, but I cannot trade it until 5/9 - long story.
MMS: Okay, then we cannot permit you to test ride.
Me: I have cash, I am motivated.
MMS: Okay, see you at noon.
<20 minutes later>
MMS: We found out there is a recall on the brake switch, you cannot ride it until that is fixed.
Me: When will that be?
MMS: Soon.
Me: Is soon 1 hour? 1 day? 1 week?
MMS: I have to wait for the mechanics, I will let you know.

That was Wednesday and I've heard nothing. I kinda found it ridiculous.

In their defense, they're not the only dealerships not allowing the bikes to leave without the recall being done. Liability issue. Of course, being a dealership, that recall should have been done months ago. Now, with supply chain issues, getting the part may/may not be quick.

Agreed - and to be 100% honest, I'll test ride it and walk out ... I bought my V-Strom there - am 53 years old, not trying to ride an R1 ... I know what I want and don't want BS

I bought mine, 16 ES , as a new leftover in 18. Never had a test ride and bought it over in he phone from a dealer. Not one regret. Best bike I’ve ever owned.

you gotta wonder how these people stay in business. if that we're me i'd prolly just walk. i rode a tidy low ks 2017 with luggage into Trevor Pierce Yamaha in Christchurch before christmas and asked the lady...'how much folding for me to ride off on that 2021'...she was back to me in 2 minutes with a number i liked. picked it up the next morning and rode home. stuff getting expensive here in NZ but the customer service is just that...serving the customer!
