I'm not a subscriber to Road Runner, but picked up a copy on the way back from the gym the other day. I didn't have my glasses with me... this is the email I sent them. I was TRYING to be nice, but definitely felt ripped off. No response yet...

I bought your April issue for the cover story - your report on the
Super Tenere. I wasted my money.

The cover says "Arizona test ride", the report itself is labelled
"riding impressions", which I would regard as considerably less than a
test. Then to read the meager 2 pages of copy... most of it was lifted
straight from the press release. There is little indication that you
actually rode it at all. I'm not saying you didn't ride it, just that
it doesn't come through in the article.

It's my own fault - I didn't have my glasses with me when I bought the
mag. If I had I would have skimmed the article and known within
seconds that it was being way oversold as a "test" or even an
"impression". Very disappointing.
A friend of mine dropped off their copy for me to read the article on the SuperT. After I read it, I knew the mag was a waste as far as MEANINGFULL reviews are concerned.

Very dissapointing.

Sorry Guys, I didn't mean to change the subject matter, but one more point. I believe MCN will do a better job with the actual Evaluation and Yes, they do highly praise the GS. Let's see what happens after they hold the S10 for a week or so. Oh yeah, I am a Rider and Cycle World Subscriber also. Back to the "Oil Burning" 8)

All of their ride reviews are like that. However, the rest of the magazine is usually very good, better than many from my viewpoint. But that isn't where I'd go for a review.
Let's just say that they tend to prefer bikes made in central Europe, or that is the impression I've gotten since I started reading it years ago.

Point taken. I agree. It is a lovely publication that focuses on touring. I think it does that well. It tends to get me lathered up and slobbering to tour these places, so I guess it does its job. But I would go elsewhere for a serious review. Can't be everything for everyone, I guess. Whoa, that was heavy. I'm on a roll. R

<Hijack> I started subscribing to RoadRunner when I met Christian at the Long Beach Cycle World Show many years back (one of the first times I went, as I recall). It is very much one of my favorite magazines for the touring content; if I want reviews of a particular bike, I usually look online. </Hijack>

In regards to burning oil, my first Yamaha burned plenty of oil too.

I have a 72 S2 Kawi. Burns some oil and it really drinks gas. A lot of power for an old 350 triple.

I grew up on the old 2 stroke street bikes,I had RD250, RD350 RD400 and H2-750's.
I finally sold most of the 2 stroke stuff but still have a race prepped RD400 motor sitting on the shelf in the garage.
Might actually do something with it one of these days but I doubt it, still fun to think about.

Man, I used to love the pure torque that I got out my old 2-stroke dirt bikes! That old KX450 would just about pull right out of your hands, no matter how hard you held on. It burned oil, by definition. Had a tank for the oil under the seat and it metered in as much as needed.

a question: on ST1200 do you change oil every 10k or 6k kilometers? I've read some guys, despite instructions manual (every 10k km) change oil every 6k....

Yamaha recommends 1K Km for initial, then every 10K Km. Beyond this, you'll find people that will recommend all sorts of regimens, even up to every 1K Km or so. Nobody has any hard data about the tradeoff between oil change intervals and engine life, so this is the stuff that is debated endlessly on the internet without resolution.

If you think Yamaha knows best, follow their advice; if you think you have a good reason to do it more often (e.g., the "oil is cheap, engine overhauls are not" argument) then do it more often.

Personally, I doubt it matters much.

With full synthetic, my car interval is 1year or 15K miles! Must have a bad ass filtration system I guess. They pay all the maintenance for the first 4 years so they're probably just cheapin' out on it. Doesn't use oil between changes though. Oil's a lot better than it was 50 years ago when they said "every 3,000 miles."

I'm not sure if it's oil burn or it evaporate , I just did a short high speed ride and an hour of off road few days back. Then today I noticed the oil warning light blinking intermittently . The oil change was 5000 km ago . So there might be a possibility.... Anyway I'm going for my oil change soon . My mechanic ever advise me of this issue too .

Checked my oil today and had to add 1/2 a quart of oil to get the oil level back to the center of the sight glass. My bikes only has 3100 miles on it and oil was changed at 500. It was properly broke in and driven responsibly. I was actually pretty surprised to see it needed oil. I can't even remember the last time I had a bike that burned oil. bummer.
