Do these make my butt look fat?

I would say the pictures make the cases look a bit larger than they really are.
I too have the Bumots and am very happy. I like the look of the bag on the passenger rack. Can you tell me what make it is and what rack you have?
Many thanks
Rob

It is a Nelson-Rigg CL-1060-ST, and I just took off the passenger seat and installed it on the passenger seat carrier. It has an expansion zipper that adds another 3"-4" height. My size Medium Shoei GT-Air fits in it when it's expanded. There are a couple more pictures at the bottom of this post:

The clips on the side that hold it on have a very positive engagement. Nelson-Rigg is popular with the cruiser crowd here in the States, the quality is very good. It is water-resistant, but it does come with a rain cover.

Derwood - Thanks for the pics I wondered what the black set would look like on a red S10. I like the silver ones also wonder how they would look with the red.

This might be silly of me, since I don't have a ST yet but I will be shopping this winter and spring for a replacement for my current BMW and am 95% certain, the Super Tenere will be the replacement bike. Which is why I joined this forum.

I am however, shopping for tents at the moment! And tent pole length is an issue with me. Could anyone tell me what the length of the Bumot is from front to rear.

As far as that goes, if anyone has Jesse's and can give me that dimension, I would be thankful! :)

Amazing that that information is so hard to find.

An option also, is to keep in mind the diagonal measurement as you could have your poles in a second bag and insert them in the pannier separately. I carry a nylon dry bag for wet tent days and place the wet tent bag outside panniers till a drying opportunity arrives. HTH.

I am also interested in any pics of the BUMOTs in the 36/40 configuration.

I got the smaller ones and the large top box. With the dry bag I put behind me to lean against, I can pack anything I want to take with me. I really like the Bumots.

There's a tent packed size thread over on ADVRider -- http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/tent-pole-packed-length-list.858061/
That should help with your decision. Lots of choices for sizes and budgets.
I bought a Kelty Salida 2 because it has a 13.5" pole length when packed. It also packs down in a rectangle, which makes it really easy to get into my big bumots. I think the Gunnison 2 and 3 also have pretty short poles. I believe my cases measured 17" on a side. 21" poles will fit from bottom inside to top outside diagonally, but that pretty much ruins your plans of putting anything else in that case (and I have the 41/45).

I've spent some time on the tent pole thread on advrider. Problem is I bought the last tent on pole length more than some other factors and it did not perform well. It was gone pretty quick. This time rain fly performance is going to be more important. My tape measure at the outdoor stores show some 19" pole length on some good contenders.

Still might just put the tent on the back like I do now but options are good.

So many choices!

I started out with the 31/38L Zega Pro set up. Tools and misc. in the small bag, luggage clothes in the larger bag. Then we started going camping. Now I have the 45/38 going on so I have a bit more room for various stuff inside the bags instead on the outside of the bags. No pillion, she has her own bike.

Tent pole length has it's place. When two man tenting, having a short pole length was awesome, getting the tent in my pannier was very nice. Now, tenting with the honey, we have a 10' x 13' tent you can stand up in. Pole length became moot! It's going on the outside no matter what. Along with the cots and chairs. :D

Hi Wncrider - the dimensions of the BUMOT Defender panniers, measured at the lid, are as follows (L x H x D):

35L – 17.7” x 16.2” x 7.9”
40L – 17.7” x 16.2” x 9.1”
45L – 17.7” x 16.2” x 10.2”

The floor of the exhaust-side case (41L or 36L) will be reduced to accommodate the cutout. There is a ~ 1/2" waterproofing lip all the way around the perimeter of the opening (which also adds a ton of strength to the box), so for larger objects, you'd want to reduce the first and third numbers by about 1". With tent poles, you should be able to sneak them around it without issue.

Hope that helps - any other questions, feel free to email me.

Thanks!

I haven't looked in a while but found that eBay Motors always was the cheapest way to get panniers and racks. You can find them both new and used by using the search words:

aluminum panniers

Most are advertised for the BMW models and you can bolt them to pretty much any Tenere rack. I went with the Givi quick detach racks and used stainless hardware from the local Ace hardware store. After all, I don't normally ride with the big side boxes, just a top box for commuting and errands. When the boxes are off the bike, all that remains are the 4 tabs on each side.

I had my first ever, on the street, motorcycle wreck the other day on my ST. Entered a curve to find fresh oil from the blown oil line of a dump truck. Was down and skidding on the asphalt before I knew what was happening. Fortunately, the only real damage was to the bike and my armored riding clothes. The Altrider crash bars and skid plate worked great. The OEM side case took a lot of abuse and held up okay. The top case popped open after the impact that looks to have been minor to it compared to the side case. I've never been happy with the locks on the OEM boxes.
Luckily, the dump truck owner was still at the scene and had insurance. Once this is sorted out, I am thinking of replacing the OEM cases with sturdier stuff. I am leaning toward the Bumot cases. The small set still looks to be larger than the OEM cases so I will probably go with those. I do occasionally have my wife with me so I will put a top case back on. Has anyone tried the smaller (25L) top case? Has anyone used it with a passenger and, if so, where do it contact the passenger's back?
