Well I Just finished a 7 day 2000 mile trip with a lot of breaks visiting friends states away. Got home, unpacked and pulled in to my garage. I recently bought the house and need to make a ramp to get into the garage. So I have to pretty much drive her up a large curb to get in. Today I smacked the rear oil nut causing a nice crack in the pan.

I think I'm going to remove the pan and have it welded in stead of replaced.

But what skid plate do I buy? I don't feel like removing the skid plate every time i do and oil change, So i would like access to the filter and drain bolts.

Removing the pan, do I just remove the outer ring of bolts and the whole bottom comes off? Or do I remove the 100 or so bolts from the inspection plate and pan as well?

Thanks all

SurfPig, Either you buy a stock supply of Oil pans, and do the swap when you break one, or get used to the removal of a skid plate for oil changes. I am not being snappy, or condensending, just factual for most of them which are on the market. There is one in Europe which JaumeyV used and it has i think a trap door for the filter removal.

YOu can buy 4-5 oil pans for the price of a skid plate now a days by the way.

Lotsa rehashed skid plate info here - search feature is your friend!

There are only 3 (that I know of) that do not attach to the engine casing - RideonADV, ACD, and Rumbux. All three are excellent.

I have to take off 6 bolts with my Rumbux to change the oil. It takes all of 5 minutes with my cordless impact drill - not a hassle at all.

If you are not going to ride offroad, why not build an inexpensive ramp and use the leftover saving for gas and tires?!!

Some of the small sump pan bolts go all the way thru, so yes you pull all the bolts around the outside, the sump plate and there is one in the center up in a recess. Not all that hard.

When you have that of you may want to remove (cut Off) the nub nub that the stock plastic rock guard mounts to. It hangs down and can get smacked even with a good Rock Guard on. A big rock can whack the guard and dent in just at the mounting tab and crush it into the pan.

Cut it off and weld up the hole.

I have an Alt rider guard and it is not that hard to remove to do service and usually requires a few whacks with a hammer to take out a few rock dent it acquires.

Good luck. All of the plates have some "short coming".

The ACD can have front tire contact.
The Rumbux can touch the ground during cornering.
The Ride-On can empty your wallet pretty quickly.

You forgot oil filter options are limited to stock length on some, Rumbux included. That's true of some other brands as well. Are the ACD people delivering again? Seems there was an issue and they were taking funds, but slow on delivery and poor at returning emails.

I think TrikePilot pretty much nailed it though, fix the pan, make a ramp, keep on riding.

I went to Yamaha dealer requesting oil filter and was asked if I wanted the long or short? Why I said, "short." And since that day I can remove the filter without removing Altrider skid plate. Have no idea of any pros or cons, other than the motor hasn't blown up, which is a pro.

+1 The Altrider has 2 holes for removing the 2 drain plugs and has just enough clearance to unscrew and remove/replace the short filter. It gets a little messy but as long as you stuff some rags in there you can clean things up.

Thankyou all, I've ordered a new pan and gasket. I was just worried about Murphy blowing my motor up and yamaha blaming it on a welded oil pan. I also have the ricochet skid plate in rout, cheap and I liked the one I bought for my husky tr650.

Just be aware that bashing the Ricochet skid plate onto an immovable object - eg: the curb at your garage - will be the near equivalent of bashing your newly replaced bottom engine pan since the ricochet bolts to that part of the engine. It is good for road debris but not a real robust solution for a piggish bike like the Tenere.

I'll put in a solid vote for the RideonADV plate. No need to remove the plate for filter or oil changes, and it protects the O2 sensors as well. At least for my riding, the plate has been money well spent.

Best,

Chris

Did and oil change last week, have the Altrider skid plate, it stays on when I do oil changes, did one last week. I do have to removed the support above the oil filter. It makes a small mess leaving the plate on but its management with some break cleaner and paper towels.

I just ordered an ACD last week and it has already shipped, arrived, and is installed on the bike ;) I did try to originally order a raw one but Cedric quickly emailed me that day and advised that it would be a few weeks before a raw was finished, however I was able to choose either the black or titan and it was shipped out that day.
