Hey guys,

I just noticed that one side of the rear rack/top case mount is broken and the other side is cracked. A few more miles and my top case would have ended up on the road. Antone else have this problem? I will call Yamaha on Monday. The pat should still be under warranty. I didn't care anything heavy in the case so the mount should have held up. I was always a little leary of removing 2 of the bolts from that rack to mount the top case. The rack/top case seemd to bounce a lot. Thanks.

Ravenrider,

You should have removed three bolts to remove rack, then reinstalled the two long bolts. If you only had one bolt in, it was the short one and that probably caused side to side rocking which cracked it. Hope this helps.

You should have 4 bolts that are securing the black top case mount to the bike. 2 shorter ones in the very front, just behind the passenger seat and then 2 long bolts that were removed from the top rack and then reinserted. It mounts pretty securely. No real bounce or wobble. If you only had the the two front bolts installed, well........

It was a recall done here.I lost my topcase when the bracket failed on a dirt road.Only noticed 50Km's down a greavel road that it was gone. This is what it looked like after breaking.I will never use a topbox again offroad.I have replaced now with a Trax SW-Motech base plate and topbox, but only for onroad duty.

How much weight did you have in the top case when the plate cracked? Just curious, as I just mounted an OEM top case.

Now that I see this I'm starting to get "worried".

I've planned a trip through the Alps in august. My idea was to use the sidecases, topcase and 1 Ortlieb saddle bag. I've read different topics with people why say it's risky to use a topcase because of the reason shown above + stability.

What would you guys do, topcas + 1 saddle bag or just 2 saddle bags ?

That is the only broken tail rack reported. Check yours rack for proper mounting. Mount the rear case, put in a test road and find a couple days of rough roads. If you are concerned about the tail rack then replace it with an aftermarket rack and still use your OEM rear case.

Guys, Remember the first generation tail bracket had a recall everywhere exceopt the USA because our bikes were still 9-12 months from being made. Yamaha did a redesign and replaced the broken ones under this. The USA got the updated new version with the larger support braces and the metal in there as well. There are tons of people running the top box for off road applications with no issues at all. I know I have used mine off road, and everythign is solid.
I use the four bolts as required to mount my plate.
