I've read considerable detail on these boards regarding brake pads, easy enough.

My question is; when does a rotor get replaced? My rear has a small lip on the edge, 22K on the bike. The pads are ready to be replaced for the first time which is what got me looking closer.

Now my rotors are smooth, no grooves, but that lip makes me question it. However it seems awful soon (and expensive) to replace.

Anyone out there who has a wear spec or preference? All opinions are welcome.

Web prices for the OEM parts are ~$145.00 for front (x2), and ~$95 for the rear. Of course add in new pads (all) for roughly $100 and it gets expensive.

However in the meantime a friend measured his rotor and found the wear is about as expected. He runs high mileage and expects 60K out of the part.

My personal experience has been never owning a bike long enough to change rotors, I usually turn them over every year or two. So it's something to learn, they take significant wear before replacing.

A side note, this bike lasts because its hard to replace. There really isn't anything else in this class that works as well for me.

Just over 17,000mi on mine and I have noticed the rear rotor has a small lip. Still alot of life in it but my pads were sketchy at 14,000mi. Amazing that you got 22,000. Those prices you found for new rotors were very reasonable for stock replacements.

There are specs for both brake disc thickness (4.0 mm front, 4.5 mm rear) and runout (0.10 mm front, 0.15mm rear) in the service manual and a process to reindex the disc on the wheel to try and correct a runout problem without replacing the disc. In practice, it generally takes a fair number of miles - I'd guess 50K+ - before the disc wear is likely to exceed specs and this is something widely ignored. I've don't think very many dealers mic discs during routine maintenance.

Thanks for looking up the spec. Mark. That solves any further questions.

The Yamaha OEM prices came from cheapcycleparts.com

I have just shy of 63k miles on my S10. The front rotors are in excellent condition, with no lip. The rear rotor has a lip, but is still well within spec.

One last note regarding pricing. I found my pads locally at San Jose Yamaha (http://www.sanjoseyamaha.com), they gave me a great price, $24.03 for the rear. Apparently they are having a "Web Special".

Anyway for those of us in this area, they offer in store pickup and the web price. Not a bad deal if your buying Yamaha OEM stuff.

If I slowed down, I'd either fall asleep or get bored. :D

Another dealer that offered great pricing was Stadium Yamaha in Texas. $22.37 for the rear (part # 3D8-25806-00-00), $33.97 for the front (part # 2C0-25805-00-00 two sets required) before their 10% off special.

39k here, same lip. No problem with the rotor thickness, still on the original set of pads. I guess I just brake less. They are getting down there and I do have a set of rear's ready to go. Funny how the brake pads went way down in price from when the bikes first came out. I'll probably get around 50k from the rear pads, though that's lower than I would have expected on a non-linked system.

I have 20000 miles and second set of rear pads are gone. I generally don't use the rear brake. Going to have to stop letting the bike do the rear braking for me as it seems to be pretty aggressive on its own.
