When i worked on ferries, we had special extinguishers for cars with mag rims. They held a kind of ceramic powder which smothered the rim and melted over them sealing out the air. Water doesnt do diddly except stop other stuff nearby burning.

This is an extract lifted from a post on another forum by the owner of the burning bike. It was posted on the BMW Club of WA forum on 6 Dec 2015:

"The clutch was acting up; gears were hard to change. So we chose to keep going instead. Keeping my eye on the temperature gauge, the motor stayed at the same temperature so we sat on around 100km/hr.

All of a sudden, just before the Jarrahdale turnoff, the bike made a bit of a noise and conked out. Thinking that the clutch had just given up the ghost, we pulled over and got off the bike. I noticed there was oil on my right boot, something must have popped and that was the noise - maybe. Walking around the bike and taking a look, I said to Marian, "Look there's a flame underneath the tank!" The flame very quickly engulfed the tank. Getting away from the bike as quick as we could, it took only a minute or so for the whole bike to go up. We were very lucky that the bush beside us didn't go up also and no one was hurt."

I have a friend with a BMW that has suffered failures of 2 fuel quick disconnect fittings , resulting in fuel spraying on a hot motor.
From what I hear this is a common BMW parts failure.

Yep they all do that...... now there, do ya feel better? ::025::
Most failures of fuel quick disconnects is do to folks forcing them apart rather the depressurizing the the fuel system first. ::021::

You’ve got a good eye Bryn. I see the Hepco Becker logo in the lower left corner.

I think that particular pannier is the only one I've not owned...seemed to have worked my way through every other manufacturer ::022::

I hear ya! I to have tried many different brands.
I'm currently using Givi Outbacks on the GSA, they were initially on the ST and I swapped them over to the BMW. They work well for me, good quality, durable, watertight, and look great in black.

See? Now that proves that BMW really is the best adventure bike, it does it all, don't have to carry any extra cooking equipment while camping..........

Bottom line this stuff shouldn't happen with a company with such rich history and gold plating their products for so many years.
Shame on them! :-\
Especially regarding final drives. Who's been doing this longer than BMW??

Any idea what causes this? Perhaps it's not the BMW's inherent flaw, but their owners' lack of wrenching competence. Too me this looks like riding without oil in the final drive

To be perfectly honest, I had about seven beemers but never had any problems with the final drive.
If I remember correctly it was a flaw in the design of the bearing. It took BMW a number of years to address the problem. Again, if my memory serves me right, they went from 12 to 13 bearing balls or something like that. They called that "redesigning". I haven't kept an eye on this so I don't know if that actually fixed the problem.
But what do I know?

Ahhhhhhh, the voice of reason, very refreshing to see that here! ::008::
Same here, and I don't personally know of anyone that has had a final drive failure, but wtf it makes for good internet chatter.

Have ya'll seen the thread about the pending recall for the ST related to the hard start issue? This shouldn't happen to a Japanese manufacturer that's been in the business for sooooo many years, and wtf took them so long to come up with a solution! ::025:: ::025:: ::26::

"CONSEQUENCE:

the only possible owner blame that could be attached to this was when BMW changed their spec on the qty of oil that the FD was to be filled with. When I had one the dealer mentioned it to me, having said that I have never heard BMW blame failures on this,
