Before you strip to check your valves

I drew very lucky this week. At 52k on the clock all indications were that my valves needed adjustment. So,I spent hours studying the topic on this forum and watching the YouTube video everyone pointed to preparing to spend at least 3 days in my theatre scrubs. Bloody thirsty work right, = copious amounts of red wine.

Fortunately I just got too busy at work so I decided to drop the bike off at my local dealer for them to do it. Upon plugging in the diagnostic, it was found not to be the valves (in fact all recordings still showed perfect), but my throttle bodies that were out of sync. $300 later, and no time spent in scrubs, all is back to perfect.

So there you have it. I strongly suggest that before you strip down your bike to check your valves take it to your dealer and ask them to check. You may save yourself an awful lot of time. (And, drink the wine in celebration instead.)

You can’t determine the valve clearances using the diagnostic plug! If you had a running issue that you thought was due to valve clearances, and instead turned put to be a throttle body imbalance, that’s one thing. It is not an alternative to adjusting the valves. Inspecting the valve clearances is something else. They are still need to be physically checked.

Also, the bike will not give you any signal such as noise or poor running when a valve or valves drift out of specification. If the engine is actually running poorly because of incorrect valve clearances, there is probably already mechanical damage.
