I'm in the market for a new battery and there's no dedicated thread on here about
who's using what battery....there should be.
So far the top contender is XTA Z12 S for $82.79 with 205 cca's . Anybody got more
cranking amps.

The Yuasa YTZ12S has 210cca and the Yuasa YTZ14S is the same size weighs 8.6 lbs.and has 230cca.

The Shorai LFX18A1 has 270cca and weighs 2.2 lbs.

There's good batteries and there's cheap batteries, but I've never seen them come in the same box.

Batteries are like oil and tires, opinions will be many and different.

There are some things that lithium batteries are great at. Laptop computers, cell phones, space craft, airplanes, and race bikes where every ounce counts. The Super Tenere isn't in that group.

Lithium batteries also have downsides and trade-offs, just like everything else. For that low weight and smaller size, they cost more, when they come to end of life they will not give warning, it's very easy to cause damage which shortens their life, and if your regulator or charging system overcharges a lithium battery it can go into thermal runaway.

The above is why to me the best battery for the Tenere is going to be a AGM, just like it was delivered with. It's essentially a modern sealed version of a good old lead-acid technology, with better protection against sulfidation and plate warpage, which were the enemies of the old wet cells.

Thanks for posting the info about the YTZ14S. ::008:: I think I'll give that a try. Noted that the non-Yuasa versions "compatible" with the YTZ14S nearly all are rated at a lower CCA, even other brands supposedly made for them by Yuasa. Something to watch for when shopping for comparables in any size.

Yuasa battery...

I have had very good luck with Yuasa batteries. I think the trick is to keep them on a trickle charger when not in use. With all the vampire draw, on new bikes, a charger keeps the battery charged. Mine lasted five years on my KLR and then I threw it out and bought a new one just in case. I do not know enough about the new lithium batteries to comment on them...other than the weight loss would not be a bad thing.

I just installed a WPS CTZ 14 S and bike started as soon as I touched the button! Never
started that easy before.

This Battery?

No specs, but what I've seen looking around is that the Yuasa ¥TZ14S with 230 CCA weighs 8.6 lbs, (the YTZ12S with 210 CCAs weighs 8.2 lbs), and the off brand batteries that claim to be replacements for the YTZ14S are rated for 180-230 CCAs, but none that I've seen weigh 8.6 lbs, usually spec, if given, is 8.2 lbs, so color me suspicious that they are really putting out 230 CCAs.

Yuasas always treat me right. I personally have been disappointed with some knockoffs.

No I don't think that's it. I bought this battery at my Yamaha dealer for $ 85.81 with my discount. My receipt says REYTZ14S 49-2288.
I called western power sports and they said this battery delivers 240 cca.

Let me straighten this out.... EricV, the battery you linked to is a CTZ14S-BS. The BS on the end makes it an AGM battery and it has to be mounted in an upright position. The only application for it listed is for KTM's. The battery mcbrien got is a CTZ-14S which is an FA battery and compares to the Yuasa YTZ batteries. The WPS store branded batteries are a lot cheaper than the Yuasa's and in most all cases they will not last near as long. WPS sells Yuasa and their store branded battery to their dealers.

I sell MC batteries for a living and the Yuasa is the best of breed in all category's.

@OldRider - Thank you for your reply. ::008:: Knowledge and experience counts for a lot and I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I've had great luck with Yuasa in the past and if my dealer hadn't let my battery sit for 4 months outside, going flat, I'm sure the YTZ12S would have lasted. But if I'm going to buy a new one, I may as well 'upgrade' to the YTZ14S. Thanks for your input on the WPS Vs Yuasa. For most, it probably won't be a big deal, but I travel, sometimes to very out of the way places.

Just in case others decide to go with the YTZ14S battery rated at 230 CCA, the fitment to look under is for a 2003 to 2010 Honda ST1300. The battery is the same dimensions as our YTZ12S rated at 210 CCA, that being 6 x 3 7/16 x 4 3/8, but if you search under the Super Ten, it will claim the 14S is not compatible in some search engines.
