Among fellow cyclist I would ask to give thoughts to one of my friends. He was a customer of mine years ago. And over the years he and his buddy have become good friends. Just after Christmas he hopped on a kids skate board fell off and broke his ankle in three places.. Dumb for sure, this guy is 55. But he is that type of person, just a fun friendly person. (maybe not so smart in this case) Well fast forward two weeks ago. He just got out of his cast and he has some type of air cast type of brace. He gets up to check his computer at or near 12 am.. He owns a large construction company and he works a ton. He is working on his computer and (I don't know yet the real story) he fell asleep or passed out, Etc.. He fell off a bar stool and broke his neck, C3 is all busted... Also his forehead and top of his skull is scalped to the bone. What he hit pulled the scalp away from his skull. His wife woke up and ran to him, he was paralyzed from the neck down. Called 911 and Helicopter came and picked him up. ( found out that was a $14K flight) Rushed him into ICU. I was asked not to come the first day or so. After two days I visited my friend. He could wiggle his legs, but no arms or hands at all. No hot or cold feeling on most of his hands and arms as well... he said it was like they where taken off. They wanted to let some of the swelling to go down so they could get him in for another CT scan to see the other damage to the spine and the cord.
Fast forward a few days, they plan the surgery for his neck. I was told it was 5.5 hours in the front of his neck and 6.5 hours on the rear of the neck. Ive been trying to get all the info I can from my other mutual friend that has been trying to go up (more on that in a few minutes). He has been in ICU for more than three weeks. I found out a few days ago that he has lost about 40 Lbs in three weeks. His arms are sill paralyzed and his legs are not getting much better. He is not doing better, but going down hill...
To add to this sad story, he and his wife have not really been doing that great for quite some time. Its not my business to know there business but as a 'friend' you know things. From what I understand she was at the Hospital for the first week the whole time. More family came in for support and things went south. His wife has basically left him. I understand that she is divorcing him. (have nothing good to say about that situation, but kids might read this post). And the last thing to this whole really sad story is this, he has a big business with many employees. This goes into a bunch of personal business stuff, but they where changing insurance companies for there whole business. At the time of this accident he and his wife had no insurance. From what I was told, not but a few weeks before this accident he had super bad ass premium insurance and insurance for other employees.. They where about to move over to another insurance company and have a similar policy. (if your an insurance expert, I really don't need to be schooled on what should have been done, or thats wrong or wright.. I'm giving the details in a nut shell, and what was passed on to me) The Hospital is already getting the paper work ready to start taking things to get paid.. After a few text I got today saying he is not doing good. Im going to try and see him tomorrow.
My friend is in a very bad spot.... From a fellow motorcyclist to another, I ask that you have some thoughts for my friend ! God bless you Mike !
