Bugger My S10 First Edition has succumed to the dreaded leaky side case gaskets. Mine is weaping on the RHS case just by the dowel on the bottom edge of the clutch basket cover. Dealer is going to take it in and sort , I've also asked them to check out what appears to be excessive corrosion on the front of the engine mainly the engine bolts that hold engine to frontengine mount, these have lost all thier paint /coating and are furry rusty coloured alongwith the steel? watercooling pipe than runs behind the exhaust headers its also looking very sorry for itself, not good for only 2500miles use , I have a 25 year old Gxr with less corrosion than this (and that has mild steel headers!). PS bike was used occaionally in the later spells of uk winter but it was also regularly washed (in cold water) and coated with SDOC100 as well.

I'm waiting on a replacement clutch cover: dealer changed the gasket and reckoned the dowels measured out OK, but it's still weeping (very slightly) at the same point. Re. corrosion, unimpressed with nickel plated spokes and I've noticed that the paint on that water pipe you mention has taken a battering on mine, too. No sign of actual rust there, though. Yet.

Have almost 9000 miles on my first edition now and have not seen any evidence of clutch cover leak or rust/corrosion yet. Only exception is some very minor discoloration / corrosion of the spokes. The bike did see a bit of salt at the beginning of winter last year. Is the oil leak a UK specific issue thus far or has it been observed elsewhere?

Makes me wonder if the crap that they put on our roads has a major effect. No one else around the world seems to suffer from our maladies, and they have much harsher conditions.

Dang, I would be ashamed to take a pic of my bike if it looked like that. ::007::

Does the warranty page identify what is covered or not.

The reason I ask is BMW had some chrome issues and was replacing parts on one model year, then in the next model year changed the list to exclude chrome issues from warranty. It must have been a big problem for them to exclude it.

Just back from dealers , new gasket fitted to the RHS case and dealer waiting on parts to replace rusted water pipe and engine mount bolts as a warrenty repair. These need to come from Japan so I suspect they'll not be quick, plus they go to a central store in europe before being shipped to Blighty and on to dealer.
Will have to see how the gasket holds up of the next few weeks .

It took a while for Yamaha to ship the bits to fix the corroded water pipe on the front of my S10 but top marks to them and my Dealer Ian Bell Yamaha as they also replaced the header pipes and fittings along with the water pipe. Result ! as I had only thought they were going to do the water pipe, the headers were stained/pockmarked from the front wheel spray and on of the stud bolt heads had rusted but I normally expect that staining as normal wear and tear on exhausts, seems Yamaha are keen to show they are resolving any issue with the S10 rather than quibble. Only downside was I had to ride 40miles there and back in the windiest /wettest day of the year, thankfully it wasnt snowing and the salt gritters havent been out yet. The poor loaner bike (FZ1000) is now covered in crap as it had to coaxed into my garage (wheelspin up a wet muddy bank) whilst I waited for the spanners to be twirled.
