In love with two-wheeled machines
I'm 5'9" with a longish torso. With the stock screen in the tall position, I can tuck down 3-4 inches and escape the bothersome wind noise that seems to come up under my helmet. I want to NAIL the wind protection upgrade without overspending. I have read, and analyzed, nearly everything on the subject and it seems the most recommended screens are either too tall or too short.
I don't want to look through the screen, but just look over it by 2" or so. It seems I would need wind protection at 20-21" height, or 3-4" wind protection over the stock 17" windshield in high position. However, when I measure, anything over 2" seems like it would intrude on my natural line-of-sight - making this a tricky problem to solve.
MY TOP CHOICES:
1) MRA touring is same height as stock at 17". Nowhere could I find the height of just the wing. It does not look like it would add 3-4" of effective protection above stock. But I am I wrong? (Alternately, this theoretically could be perfect if I install the low seat which I have considered. I know, changes everything... argh!)
2) MRA Xcreen looks too tall at 21" high without the wing... unless it can be lowered at least 2 inches from my stock set-up in the high position. Can I use a lower setting with the Xcreen, as I can with the stock screen? That might work for me, though I would then be concerned it would be too big (hot) during the Summer given it's over all width and height.
3) National Cycle V-Stream Sport Height (+1" over stock) or, Sport-Tour (+4" over stock)... with an adjustable bracket?
An adjustable bracket seems like an all-around winner. Some variability would be nice for, A) dialing the buffeting in as well as, B) adjusting air flow for hot vs. cold days. I have considered trying an adjustable bracket with the stock screen, but it seems it would come up shy of the 3-4" of extra protection I need. My other concerns are introducing too much wind & water in under the screen, as I live in the Pacific Northwest and ride in a fair amount of cold and wet. Besides the bracket+new screen = $3-400! What to do?
I like riding year-round and need a versatile set-up. I deal with a lot of rain and subsequent fogging and vision issues and wonder if blocking the wind from blowing under (and on) my helmet would prevent good ventilation needed for defogging.
I imagine I won't know till I try, but I thought I'd post this anyway. If money weren't an issue, I'd get a bracket first, bigger screen later (choosing a size based on what I learn from adjusting the stock screen).
Are there any 5'9" - 5'10" guys out there who have this worked this issue and perfected the situation optimally?
