Are Gas Prices Crimping Your Riding?

Here in Illinois, I generally need to ride 50-60 miles just to get to the better riding. While the ST is great to get me there and back routinely, It does start to give me pause when a single fill up approaches $30. I really think she runs better with 91+ octane, but I have gone with some of the cheaper octane recently to offset the high cost. A ~300 mile day trip is now costing about $40 in gas alone. Illinois/Cook Co has some of the highest prices in the Midwest. I really feel sorry for our European counterparts who probably view our prices as cheap.

I ride, instead of drive, for sanity preservation. I'm paying about $26 for premium, for 200ish miles. Still beats my Jeep which only gets 16ish mpg. And since my Jeep is topless, the heat is the same. The weatherman has predicted 103°-106° for the next week and a half.

EDIT: My thermometer, in the shade . . . . 108°.

It hasn’t crimped my riding time as a southern Illinois resident. I do frequent Missouri gas stations as they are 45-75 cents cheaper than Illinois depending on where you are in Missouri. Plus, Missouri has better riding. I have been riding my Tenere 700 more as it is cooler in hot weather and gets about 10 mpg better gas mileage than my S10.

I have always rode my bikes for daily use. Chores commuting and fun. I definitely feel the gas prices in my pocket but it hasn't changed my routine. I have how ever bought a DR 650 that gets a bit better gas mileage than my Super T and I am using it for the fun much more than the Super T. It gets about 53 to 54 miles to the gallon compared to my Super T that stays in the 47 to 49 range. I have on one occasion in Nebraska got almost 62 miles to the gallon on my Super T. On the other hand I have ridden it hard on the interstate when I didn't have time or the traffic was dictating the speeds and never gotten below 41 miles to the gallon so it is pretty good for me. I know a lot of cars will get that kind of mileage now but they are cars! I feel so sorry for those people!

I work from home and only leave to go to the gym or pick up my daughter from ballet. That means driving my car. For that reason, I really only ride my bike for fun. I live in Central California which means that just getting to the fun stuff is a journey and it requires at least a half day in the saddle to make it worthwhile. Basically, when I ride I guarantee I will drain a full tank and then some. With CA gas prices, that's roughly $40 per fillup, depending on the station and fuel grade... so yeah, it's kinda put a halt to my riding. Hard to justify a $40 day to just screw around on roads I've ridden 100 times.

I had planned a 3 day trip next month but I calculated that it would cost nearly as much in gas as it would in lodging... plus the state is on fire again, so what's the point?

I've found that yes, altitude does increase mileage while decreasing power. I've also found that in cooler temps, octane is less of an issue. But, if it's hot and the bike is loaded, the octane has to be higher.

When I think about what I've spent on farkles and gear, a little more at the pump pales in comparison. I've use my S10 for daily commuting (50 miles total) as much as possible over the years and with the price of gas being higher, the fuel savings probably cover the tire wear now that the difference is higher vs a car. My alternative is a diesel that gets about 42 mpg, but diesel has gone up enough I'm not too worried about the added S10 tire wear. Yeah, I rationalize it, but it's probably a wash in the end.

But no, the price of gas hasn't changed much of my riding. And riding for fun is still cheaper than a therapist.

Riding a liter bike is not about saving money with economical transportation. That is what mopeds & scooters are for. The liter bikes are all about the smiles per gallon.

NZ$3.30/ L (95) at the mo...crazy money but not enough to curb my riding enthusiasm...yet. My deisel mitsubishi triton (work truck/ everyday car) cost NZ$170 at the last fill, up from $100 at christmas. I'm definately more judicious with my everyday motoring, but not the bike.

Its more my work schedule that has put a damper on my riding in 2022. The price of gas/diesel has really put a damper on my comings-goings in my truck. Tundra gets an average of 15mpg and the Dodge diesel gets 22. I have been riding the TU250x quite a bit, and am enjoying the 75 mpg that it gets. The price to fill up the Dodge was $215 last fill up. o_O

Though I obviously not enthusiastic on paying such high prices on fuel it has not changed my life style.
I have just returned from a 7 day remote adventure with my jet boat in the northern part of BC in a couple of lakes and river, over 100km round trip and at 10gal/hr of premium 91oct. plus the diesel in the F350 for the 6hr drive one way to get there, my fuel bill is pushing a $1000.
But hey there are many that will spend a hell of alot more on a all inclusive vacation to sit there arse on a beach drinking for a week.

In about an hour heading out the door with the wife for a 500km round day trip on our bikes. Just for the hell of it, what can you do for $100 today.......ride an S10 LOL.
