There's a 2013 Super Tenere for sale about 100 miles from me advertised that says "4th and 5th gears skip". Here's the cut/paste from the ad:

2013 Yamaha Super Tenere 1200cc.
65k miles
Clean title
New tires Continental TKC
The bad, 4th and 5th gears skip. Rest works perfect.
Pink slip in hand. Price firm. ($3200)

I can't say that I've heard of anyone having those problems, but anything can happen. Engine has to come out, get split to change the gears but I suppose someone could put it together with eBay parts and a new gasket set for under a grand.

Its not an issue BUT it is not uncommon to bend a shift fork if your the type to hammer hard on the shifter on most any bike.
The problem will likely be a shifter fork and not the gears them selves. Easy fix, we see lots of motocrosser with bent or damage shifter forks.

Likely a bent fork causing it, yes. May have damaged a few gear dogs depending how long it has been operating like that. 80's model Yamaha street bikes used to have a lot of second gear issues, been inside a couple of them. They were split horizontally, so didn't have to disassemble the top end. I don't know if the Tenere is built like that? Some sport bikes are, I did a Hayabusa transmission a while bike and it was similar as was an R6 engine I took apart.

From looking at an eBay listing, it looks like the Tenere engine is split horizontally so it could be a "fairly" simple job to get into the transmission. Still a lot of work, but I imagine I could get it done in a day in the garage.

As mentioned.... might be a tooth... probably not........ probably a shift fork or a "dog-paw" broke..... If you buy the bike, pull the pan to see any metal bits..... you can also look up at the trans and see the teeth.....

The gaskets, head studs and other parts get expensive quick...... many of these parts from Japan and have a lead time, no problem if you're not in a hurry........ Pulling the engine down is pretty easy if you have all the new parts and tools..... When it's all said and done, and fixed, it will probably only be worth every penny you already have into it, minus any labor you did for "fun".....

Probably not a money maker, if that is the plan........ Make way more money parting it out..................... IMOP

True, I've been seeing some first gen models selling around the $5-6k range. Parting it out could make money, but I've done that a couple times and it's a long process with lots of parts lingering for ages.

Yeah, but if you've got space and patience.... mamayama is going to stop making these sooner rather than later and then having good used parts for sale will be money in the bank. (Of course, with the reliability of the S10, it may be a long time before you get ROI on any parts other than collision damage stuff.)
