I am exploring different options to make my butt and back more happy on my Tenere. Does anyone here have specific experience with one of Rick Mayer's seats? The good, bad, and ugly would be appreciated! I am not sure that I can wait for Corbin or Sargent to offer a new seat.... :(

I had a Rick Mayer seat on my 05 ST1300. Sent him the original seat along with pictures of me sitting on the bike and of my wife and I sitting on the bike, as requested. It came back as a beautiful seat and on the first ride I thought it was great. After a bit, though I found that it wasn't what I wanted as far as comfort. Bought a Sargent World Sport seat and lived happily ever after.

I just remembered that I had quite a bit of a hassle getting my seat back anywhere near the time originally promised and I wasn't the only one that had that problem at that time. He may be doing better in that respect now, however.

BTW, I have talked to the modification guru at Sargent and I have ordered a spare front seat from Yamaha which I will be sending to them next week to have them modify for me. I know that it probably won't be as good as the World Sport that they will eventually make, as they normally make a wider seat pan for those, but it should be better than what I have now.

I should have been sending the spare seat today, as it just arrived. The package had the correct part number, 23P-24710-10-00, but they sent the rear seat. We are sending it back for an exchange.

Thanks Fred,

2 Questions:
1. How much from Yamaha for a new factory front seat?
2. Do you know about how much Sargent is going to charge to do the mods to your factory seat?

I spoke with reps at Sargent, and they responded that they have no intention of making a seat for the Super Tenere at this time. They advised me to use their custom seat department and have it done that way.

I get my parts at employee discount price. I think retail is about $190.

We are a Sargent dealer, so also get a discount on the mods. Retail is about $300, I believe for new foam, reshape and new cover. We are going to finalize details when they get the seat. This is for the front seat only, as I don't have the back one installed on my bike.

As we discused in another thread, they have no plans AT THIS TIME to make a S10 seat, but I encourage anybody that is interested to contact them, as that is what it will take for them to get interested in making one for our bikes.

;)

Thanks again Fred!

I did email Sargent and Corbin a while back to let them know I am interested in a seat from them. Hopefully there will be more options soon, I just don't know how long I can wait. The stock seat just does not do well for me.

I've had two now and considering my third for the Tenere. I've also tried the Bill Mayer and Russell Day Long. My quest for a comfortable saddle is ongoing. Thus far Rick is my favorite. As a stop gap measure I'm currently using an airhawk seat and it has its advantages. As the saying goes opinions are like a$$e$ everone has one and they are all different. I think seats come in two varieties soft and hard. Some guys like hard seats and some like soft. Rick's is much softer than the Bill's and RDL's. This is going to sound a little weird but I wish someone would come up with an "a$$ cast" or mold for the purpsose of custom seats. Good luck in perch search and my apologies if I've offended anyone by using the A word.

Has anyone contacted Corbin to see if they have any plans for a saddle for the SuperT?

(and before everyone jumps in that dislikes Corbin cuz they are so hard, I actually prefer a harder saddle)

I did. They have an electronic form on their website (link below) to fill out for a new product request. Corbin was actually my first choice. I have heard lots of good things about Sargent (and others) but I have always liked Corbin seats. They are hard, but it works for me. Plus I still have a Corbin passenger backrest I was hoping to be able to use again.

If you have any interest at all drop them a line. Maybe we can show enough demand for them to make a seat for us

Here is the ugly:

I had a build date set up for the seat on my WR250R a couple years ago. After almost 3 months he stopped responding to my requests for updates on when to send my seat in even though my credit card had been charged for the full amount on the build date. Had to dispute the charges with my credit card company to get my money back. The lady at the credit card company said he didn't respond to their correspondence either.

Had a Rick Mayer seat on my Tiger. Was initially double charged but eventually got a refund. No improvement over stock and I did not like the cover material he uses. IMO if you are having a seat made specifically for you, ride in and let them fit you right, or don't do it in the first place. How are they going to get your ass right if it is not there for the fitment?

I agree with that, at least with regard to Rick Mayer. While I didn't like the one he made for me based on my stats and pic, a friend had two made when he did ride in's to Rick's place and he liked them.

Ride in appointments get you a better fit.

I have had seats built by Russell, Rich's Custom seats, and Rick Mayer.

Rick Meyer was a problem, search for the thread about him on ADV Rider

I purchased a Rick Mayer seat for my KLR650 back in the fall of 2008. I too had read a lot of negative comments regarding communication with Rick Mayer (Company) on the sites I visited then (KLR650.net, advrider.com). Due to a fall/winter sale that he had on at the time I decided to take the chance.

When having your seat customized by Rick Mayer, you fill out a form that provides info of your height, weight, inseam, and as well you provide pictures of yourself sitting on your bike with the stock seat. There was three cover options at the time I believe. Vinyl standard, vinyl weave, and leather. I chose the weave.

I think there is an advantage to being able to visit these customizers to get that perfect fit. Due to Rick being on the west coast (California) and my being on the east coast (Nova Scotia Canada) that was not an option. For myself, at that time communication was great between myself and their office. I always received a reply to any/all of my inquiries . Due to the fact that I was in the middle of a Canadian winter while my seat was away, there was no timeframe of production that became an issue. In fact I told Rick Mayer this when my seat was mailed out that he could take his time with it.

I really liked the seat modification. The fit and finish of the seat was exceptional. No comparison to the stock seat (torture) of the KLR. If I had been on site during the modification I would have the angle going into the tank reduced somewhat, but after break in the seat for me was perfect. Being tall, I requested a higher seat that made the seat footpeg relationship much better. It felt and looked like what the stock seat should have been from the factory.

It put ruffly 11,000kms on the seat before selling the bike to a friend who enjoyed the seat as much as I and who rode the KLR around the Trans Labrador with me last summer. The seat had over 20,000kms on it in two years when he sold the bike and it (the seat) looked as good as the day I received it. My current ride is a KTM 990 Adventure with a Renazco seat that I do not enjoy nearly as much. It is much harder than the Rick Mayer of the KLR. As mentioned by others here its all in the preference in what type of seat you prefer.

From my own experience with Rick Mayer, I would recommend his work to anyone. My current KTM is not meeting my needs which brings me to this site. If I purchase a Super Tenere and do not like the seat, I would not hesitate in sending its seat to Rick to modify.

Best of luck with your future shopping !

Yup! Nothing like poor customer service to spoil an otherwise enjoyable experience.

I believe Corbin is on it. JJ (the guy on another thread about mounting Clearview Kristas and Glendas) tells me Corbin has his S10 in their shop to develop a seat.

I loaned them a bike of mine a few years ago for the same thing. If the timing is the same, we should see pictures and prices on their site in a month or two.
