Any idea where this part could be from?

I was out riding my S10 on some fire roads and decided to stop for a break. When I set the bike on the side stand I noticed this part (see attached picture) drop to the ground right next to the side stand. I can't figure out where it came from so hoping someone can help identify it and where it's used. Thanks for the help!

Don't know but...

... was there any maintenance performed recently?

... did you install a skid plate?

That's really large, but it looks like the collar that goes in a rubber bushing to protect it from crushing by tightening a fastener. As Tim asked, what was the most recent thing done to the bike? There are two such collars in the bushings that mount the tank to the frame. They're #6 in the parts fiche.

Oh, and ::004::

Looks to me like a bushing from the front of the gas tank... one on each side of the forward mount to frame.

I changed my spark plugs for the first time the weekend before that ride. Since then I've raised my tank and looked around but couldn't see anything that was obviously missing. I do have an ACD skid plate, but that was installed 2 or 3 years ago (it's been off and on a number of times for oil changes). I'll check the gas tank mounts - thanks for the input!

I actually encountered another problem on that ride (after changing my spark plugs). After warm up and riding for a while, weird things started to happen (inconsistently). The first is the engine started dying at idle (just pulling in the clutch at a stop sign). It happened a few times in succession then the problem went away. The other thing that started happening is if the bike was in gear, clutch out and rolling, it would idle at 3500 (like riding with cruise control which is really challenging in the dirt going down hill). If I pulled the clutch in it would blip to 4000 then drop to normal idle just over 1000. Release the clutch and it would go back up to 3500. This also seems to happen after warm up.

I've taken off the airbox, checked all the hoses and connectors and they seem to be secure. I've also disconnected/reconnected the battery to reset the ECU. I just need to take her out to see if the problems still occur. I never thought I could screw things up like this changing spark plugs!

Thanks again for any clues to these problems.

Is yours a Gen1 (thru 2013) or Gen2 bike?

Do a search for symptoms such as yours from the home page and there are threads about the throttle position sensor. See if one of those sounds right.

Reseat the coils. A poor connection or a bad coil or a bad plug could throw out those idling symptoms. Put in those old plugs n see if it goes away as one way to trouble shoot.

Look at the fuel tank schematic in the parts fiche. Looks like #33, a collar that goes with the charcoal cannister on CA bikes. If the collar fell out then you must be missing the associated bolt (#34). If you're lucky the grommet (#32) will still be there.

Can't see how this could be related to your other problems unless the loss of these canister parts is causing vapor lock in your fuel tank or something like that.

Good eye. Those would be smaller than the one he held, and he wouldn't have had them unfastened. One of the gas tank collars got caught and flipped out of it's grommet. It's even possible the vent lines got kinked. When the bike is running bad, pop the gas cap and see if things go back to normal.

Looks just like the center stand bushing. And sounds like that's where it dropped from.

On second thought...I think the center stand bushing may be thicker and made of aluminum. So yeah, probably fuel tank mount bushing.

Performing a valve adjustment and was mistaken before... the bushing is under the tank and there are two which attach the air box (top corners) to the frame.
