I'm looking at buying a 2012 that I doubt has ever had the valves checked. I've talked to two different Yamaha dealers that both told me they have very limited experience with the Tenere and both quoted that the job would be at least $1k. I'd rather avoid having to do it myself if I can help it.
Any good Tenere mechanics in the SF Bay Area or elsewhere in NorCal/

No surprise that your local dealers are not familiar with the Super T.... however, once you get in there, it's really just a standard shim-under-bucket arrangement like an FJR and countless other bikes. However, a possible $1K bill is what pushes many of us to just do it ourselves.

Take your time and you'll get through it no problem...
I have a shop manual and a shim kit... you are welcome to use both.

there are a number of you tube vids illustrating the job. I watched two the night before i purchased my ST. Looks like a weekend job in the garage or covered side yard. Just think of all the trips you could go on with that 1K.. Plus once you've done it the first time i'd bet you could get it down to 3 or 4 hours and have the satisfaction of knowing exactly what's what. I always fear trusting the shop after some of the reports and tales of shady operators.

I'm in San Diego, did two valve adjustments on my Tenere and made a video of the second one showing some ways to make it a bit easier. It's not terribly difficult but some people seem to act like it's the end of the world. Taking your time it would be 4-6 hours.
