I'm a big fan of flat track racing. Whether it be the big boys and the AMA races or just one of the local races it is a lot of fun to watch. I get over to Springfield for both events, Peoria for the TT, Lima, The Indy Mile, and will even try to fit Knoxville in this year. I also make it over to Marion County ( www.midamspeedway.com ), and Neoga if it isn't too wet.

A buddy of mine campaigned a nice Kawi twin in 2012 and 2013, but had to pull the plug on the racing for 2014. Ricky had the bike to beat on the miles with Bryan aboard!

If any of you frequent any of these events, let me know. It would be fun to have a bit of an impromptu get together.

I wrenched on a friends XR back in the 70's. I had a blast and got to hang around the pits with the likes of Springer, Roberts, The Scott brothers, Kidd, Keener and Morehead. You had a lot of good races there in Terre Haute at the Fair Grounds. Louisville Downs was always one of the big races every year. I've still got some old tee shirts and a Camel Pro hat from the era.

I'm planning on going to Springfield. Went last year and watched the rain come down, my first trip on the S10. Found out the bike handles great going 70 in hurricane type rain coming home. See you're in for ROD, good deal.

There is no Motorsport more exciting then flat track....period!

When I was living in the NE I'd get to Syracuse, NY and Hagerstown Va regularly. My cousins husband, Bob "pops" Sweeten and later his grandson Georgie Price were on the circuit...

I've never been to Springfield, maybe this year....

I am at each of these races you list above + quite a few more. We are from the Springfield area and for the Memorial Day and Labor Day we set up a motorhome there on the IL State Fair grounds. Our motorhome is very near the ticket booth into the short track arena. Most of the weekend there will be many there because we offer free food & beer to anyone who stops by. Our motorhome is in the handicap camping area and we have the same site each year and is the first two sites. Most nights after the races we will have a lot of the riders sitting there with us. Please stop in the owner of the motorhome is Dean, everyone knows us let me give you my cell number if you can't spot us 217 412-3080 name is Doug, tell me you are from this forum if you call. All the other races we ride when we meet we can compare notes.

Lived in Chicago for 52 years and hit every flat track race within 300 miles. I miss the old Santa Fe speedway in Hinsdale. We got the short track and TT both every year. Springfield, Indy, DuQuoin, Peoria, Terre Haute, Louisville. Boy those were the days! 8)

You guys are bringing back great memories for me. I'm a has been that used to ride the circuit and rode at almost all of the tracks you talked about in the early 70s. I now ride my Tenere and keep it close to legal speeds (most of the time). Being from California it has been many years since Peoria and Santa Fe for me. I'm teaming with my good friend Don Emde and riding the Cannon Ball ride (not race) starting next Saturday. I really look forward to seeing much of the country I used to race in.

Big fan of flat track. WE go and watch a friend race at a track just south of Alvin. We also went to all of the FT and TT races in the Astrodome back in the 70's. They had the motorcycle show next door in the Astrohalll at the same time. That sure was some fun times.

Looks like Yamaha and a few Tenere's are involved with the Cannon Ball also.

Another COOL friend and Daytona winner, Ralph White, will be riding his Tenere on the Cannon Ball ride. Ralph also won Springfield in the sixties. Check out the website www.cannonballproject.com
Very sad about Sacramento. I fear this may start a movement by all horse people and kill a fantastic American sport. How many years has there been races on horse tracks with no problems. Suddenly conditioning the track is going to hurt the horses feet…hoof or whatever you call them.

Well, I don't really follow the racing, though it is incredible to watch. I'm just a poser....... because my other bike is this. Still mostly just a sportster, but as a kid I always thought the XR750 and Evel Knievel's bikes were what a real motorcycle should look like, mostly because of Evel. I did watch Mert Lawill in On Any Sunday many times, and I wound up buying Harley's "tribute" to the XR750, just because of the way it looked. I probably should have built my own, might some day. I Love the street tracker look. The other real XR's are not mine.

Mashy, it was a pleasure meeting you today during your stopover in Greenville, IL during the Cannonball Run. I posted some pics in another thread here: http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=11654.msg191244#msg191244

Gonna' take a shot in the dark here and ask...

Mashy wouldn't happen to be Keith Mashburn, would it? The Keith Mashburn of long time AMA flat track fame, factory Yamaha rider, "On Any Sunday" star, fire fighter, arson investigator, city councilman, etc.?

Seems like the forum handle and what info you've provided here is just too much of a coincidence. If you are that Keith Mashburn my hat's off to you, sir. I watched you race many times, and I was a a fan. ::008::

Thanks! Especially for being *FAST*!!! ::003::

Hi Dallara,

Yes, that is Keith Mashburn. I had the pleasure of meeting him yesterday and visiting with him again this morning as he rode the Cannonball Centennial Run. Very cool guy who loves his Super Tenere and now that he rode mine, will be getting a flash for his ECU..

Houston Texas is so far away from anything and wished I could go to these races as I did race on some of these tracks back in the 60's and early 70's through out the Midwest when I lived in St Louis. Neil Keen National #10 died at the age of 79 January this year a mentor of mine and friend who dominated Santa Fe in the sixties and early seventies, Granite City across the river from St Louis and any short track he went to race. He was the all time Champion of Ascot in California before he came to live in St Louis.

The irony is that the horse racing business here in Oklahoma isn't doing all that well. In this part of the country it has always been a big deal but our local racetrack (which has never hosted anything but thoroughbred and quarter horse racing) has become a "racino" and merge with a casino in order to keep its doors open.
