Another XT1200 newbie ......

I collected my XT1200 from our local Yamaha dealer on Saturday afternoon, after months and months of trying out various bikes to replace my old Triumph Tiger 955i. I'd previously excluded even testing one out, as they were horrendously expensive new and used ones were few and far between. Then after trying out a nice used Tiger 1050 earlier in the week, I noticed that the dealer was selling off their XT12 demonstrator. Having offered me a test ride, I took it out for a couple of hours on the Thursday and came back absolutely smitten with it. It was much like I imagined it would be, very torquey but quite smooth for a big parallel twin with lots of character.

After negotiating a good part exchange deal for my Tiger and also negotiating (aka begging) with my wife, I did the deal and collected it on Saturday. I managed to get a fairly decent ride out on her yesterday and am now convinced that buying her was a really good move, despite the big dent in my pension fund.

Had a good look on this site since and after reading about their tendency to shed wheel spokes, I checked her over this morning. And guess what? Two spokes were so loose that I could turn the nipples with my fingers and a few others were also in need of a bit of a tweak. Happily they're now all tight and going ping at roughly the same pitch, when tapped with an allen key. Something to keep any eye on I think.

I've also been trawling the internet for engine bars and panniers and after much searching i've gone for Givi's all round. Out of all that I looked at, the Givi bars allow the battery/radiator panels to be removed whilst in situ and looked the neatest. The Givi Trekker cases look about the best for my needs and to my eyes, seem less cumbersome than the mahoosive aluminium boxes that seem to be fitted to adventure bikes nowadays. I'm also quietly pleased with myself at having found a pair of the 33 litre cases at £200 under what the dealer was planning to charge me. E-bay can be such a fabulous thing you know.

So, being a newbie here, any tips, hints and things to look out for would be very much appreciated whilst I find my way around the bike, which has now been named "Soupy Ten" by my youngest daughter. And if anyone here happens to be passing between Chesterfield and Matlock in Derbyshire, you'll be more than welcome to call in for a large cuppa and a slice of home made cake at mine. :)

::004:: from the Pacific Northwest, congratulations on your new purchase. The best part is, the bike gets better the more miles you put on it.

Welcome Mike!

Just down the road from you, so feel free to get in touch. Lots of advice from guys on here and plenty to read through - although I suspect you started to read a few weeks ago!

Good choice!

Thanks for the warm welcome to the forum guys. It would appear that the S10 has a very healthy following across the pond too which is always good. I was surprised to find that there are a few local S10 fans around too. Prior to getting mine, I never really saw that many of them on local roads to be honest but I guess I'll be seeing them everywhere now that I have one.

Also........"XTDelZ", yes I did get mine from Clay Cross too. They tried to get me to go for a brand new one but they only had silver and surprisingly enough, I much preferred the look of the white one. It was their demo bike too, so it was marginally easier on the wallet! I often take a bimble up around your neck of the woods, so i'll keep an eye out for you and perhaps we can meet up for a brew sometime.

And......."The Ferret" , it's great to know that there's another S10 owner just around the corner, less far to go for cups of tea and mutual bike appreciation sessions (I don't know about you but I have three women in my immediate family and none of them seem to get it!). What colour is yours by the way and how have you found it to be so far? ::26::

Welcome ::008::

I wanted a white one, but got a great deal on a 150 mile silver one, £9400 - could not turn it down.

I fitted SW-Motech Trax to mine, but hard luggage is the main thing, easy to just load up and leg it at a weekend.

As for mods, well the clutch mod is well worth it for such a low cost, I bought a switch of E-Bay for under a tenner and use that to get a load of extra low down grunt.

I have also modded the suspension, OE stuff is OK, but the ground clearance was a bit lacking and the shock way too soft for two-up, so I fitted a nice Wilburs, for solo use maybe an expensive extravagence but it does ride bumps a lot better and two-up transforms handling and ground clearance. Forks have been reworked do as to not remove my fillings when breaking over bumps - not too pricey for a significant difference to ride quality.

Just tested O2 eliminators and have some de-cat header en-route, the O2 eliminators really increase throttle response massively, you can get them for under £30 off E-Bay, they will probably cost you 2-3mpg, but the feel is great with the bike taking off on a whiff of throttle.
