Hey Macca, welcome!

Nothing whatsoever wrong with a demo, especially if you're one of those "break 'em in HARD" believers.

Macca, looks like we have a similar taste in bikes (as well as near matching forum handles!).

I swapped an XT660Z for the Super Tén and have fond memories of the LC too... To my mind the 1200 is a much more capable roads bike but the 660 has a charm of its own. It'll be interesting to know what you make of the switch.

I'd agree the XT660Z is a very capable and fun bike to ride and can lead you into temptation on twisty lanes :D
The 1200 is a lot more stable and has a lower CofG where I sometimes found the 660 a little top heavy if wrong footed (though lighter than the 1200 obviously).
Still getting to grips with the 1200 though it may take a while with the winter closing in and the roads being a bit skeitie (wet and potentially slippy underfoot or tyre). Suspension wise you can see yamaha spent some cash on the 1200 where the 660 was built down to a price, same could be said for the bodywork fittings. though they could have fitted similar indicators from the 660 to the 1200 as the stockers are a bit cheap and nasty.
Side stand on the 1200 is my other gripe, its seems a smidge short and not easy to get down as my pants keep catching the peg as I swing it out.

It's funny you should mention the side stand. It did seem far too short to me straight after the 660's (which held the bike too upright!) and I'm still not convinced by it after a few months of ownership. I think some kind of stand foot extender is needed as the bike never feels that stable on uneven ground when on the side stand. The Altrider one looks good, but also very expensive, particularly when you factor in the shipping.

I have no idea what's supposed to be going on with that peg thing on the stand - it's in the wrong position to use easily as a lever to flip the stand down.
