OK, so I changed the oil today for the 600 mile 1st service. Keeping with the owners manual recommendation since doing it myself, I used Yamalube 10/40 and the same, but new, oil filter as stock. I drained out the oil in both places, put it on the side stand for the #2 drain, removed the oil filter and measured the perfect amount of oil.... 3.4 Liters or 3400 ml. I took the bike on a ride afterwards, let it sit and the oil viewer only reads at the first line mark. Before it was between the lines. I will not add any more since I used the factory recommended amount. Is this normal?

My procedure.........ride 20 miles or more, on the side stand for 5-10 minutes, on the center stand/drain both oil plug holes and remove the filter, wait 10 minutes, re-install the drain plugs/torque, install new filter, fill with 3.6 qts of my favorite oil, and ride another 5000 miles.................repeat. It works for me...YMMV

::008:: Pretty much what Whisperquiet said. Oil is 3.4 liters & 3.6 quarts with an oil filter swap I believe. Stinking' sight glass is a liar anyways :D

OK I figured out the problem....it's the Yamalube container. It's marked inorrectly.

On the side of the 4 liter/quart plastic container are markings with a sight line to see how much oil is in the container. On the left side the top quantity is 4 qts. On the right side which is higher in volume is 4 Liters.

4 qts equals one gallon
4 litters equals 3.78 liters. Remember the liter side is higher than the quart size.

The effin container is off!!! They made a mistake and labeled qts and liters on the wrong side! WTF! I guess I'm off by about 200ml of oil which is why the line is at the bottom on the viewer.

Tim -

Not understanding your complaint. 4 qts = 1 gal = 3.78 liters, so the 4 liter mark should be above the 4 qt mark, which it is on the gallon jugs of Yamalube that I buy. And the jug is filled to the 4 qt mark. Even if the marks were flipped, how would that throw you off if you measured 3400ml? Did you try to eyeball pouring 3.4L from a 1 gallon jug? Anyway, no worries - if you got the oil level anywhere within the sight glass after an oil change you deserve some kind of award!

I personally do not give a shit about over filling mine by .22 liters. I just dump a gallon jug of synthetic Shell Rotella, and don't worry about it for 5k miles. 30k miles and no issues so far.

I think you've analyzed this a bit too much. Measure out what you want to fill the motor with, fill it, and move on with life. I don't see how the labels are off, but if you're measuring, it doesn't matter anyhow.

I have always added the required amount of oil after an oil change, and when I checked, the quantity has been at the full line.

Thanks for the responses. I should clarify that the jug was filled to the 4 liter mark which is above the 4 quart mark. Very simple, in volume a liter is less than a quart...not by much but it's less. The jug label says it contains one gallon. By the markings of the oil at the 4 liter mark, this would make the jug contain contain more than a gallon. I used the liter mark until I got down to 1 liter, then measured out 400 ml. (After living in Europe for so many years, the metric system is easier for me) Anyway 4 liters = 4.22 qts. ::002::

SO....My OCD must have kicked it :D

I will put in another 100-200 ml and call it good! :p

Another oil thread!!
:D

Lets stay within the Galaxy of the subject PLEASE!!!!!.
Yes I agree with putting a quick pour gallon in leaving the residual oil for the lawn mower. never caused an issue 29000 happy miles.
Filling the Tenere and looking at the glass will make you crazy as a Shit house Rat.. :'(

My personal experience is that whenever I go for a short ride (say 3 or 4 miles) the oil level in the sightglass is bearly visible after putting the bike on the centre stand and waiting for around 10 minutes for the oil to settle down. Whenever I go for a long ride the oil level in the sightglass is where it's supposed to be. Don't ask me why because this is very strange.

I was going to give you a free pass since you lived in Europe and indeed if you divided an imperial gallon into 4 quarts, a liter would be less than a quart. But since you then say that 4 liters equals 4.22 quarts, I realize you are just having a brain fart. So, it's not so simple afterall, in volume, a liter is MORE than a quart. LOL

This makes me think it's not the jug that's off. ::)

You all make me laugh. I'm glad my sarcasm made it through. Although I do just pour the gallon jug in and move on.

No, a liter is MORE than a quart. 1.000L = 1.0567qt

Back to your normal programming, there is no crisis in Yamaha oil volume labeling. Timlaw, no more drinking and posting. ;D
