Just bought an Arai RX-Q helmet, some Frank Thomas boots and two pairs of gloves. Add that to the cost of my MSF course and I've got what's cracking up to be a very expensive hobby. ;D The worst of it is that I don't even have a bike! Next paycheck will be jacket and pants. Figured I'd get these purchases out of the way, a little at a time, so that when I go to get tenere I won't wince as badly at the price.

Oh Ollie .... you just don't know what you've unleashed. You need different kit for different eventualities. Leathers, textiles light and heaveyweight, waterproofs, summer boots, wet weather boots, open face, full and dual sport helmets, gloves .... oh you need so many pairs of gloves. It's never ending .... never, ever. ;D

I know this narrative very well. :( Lightweight fly rod for small creeks, heavyweight for big rivers and lakes, lightweight fly rod for inshore salt and heavy for offshore salt, not to mention spinning gear and tackle. Fishing license for Kentucky, Florida, Michigan and North Carolina-all for the same year. Fur and feathers from every mammal and fowl on the planet for tying flies..........Deja vu, all over again. I knew this was a bad idea! ;D

Ha! The wife doesn't know the stuff I buy. She'll say, "where did this so and so come from?" I respond, "what, that old thing? I've had that forever." Don't know how I'm gonna hide the tenere. ;)

Any thoughts on my choice of helmet? I have the option to return within seven days if I'm not satisfied. I tried a bunch of different helmets and this one just felt the best, but when it comes in next week I'll bring it home and wear it for an hour or so and see how if feels after that.

Ollie, if you don't know how your gonna hide the Tenere, shouldn't you have thought of that before you put down the deposit? I asked my wife if i could sell the current ride, the STrom, she then said you want to buy the Yamaha don't you? See, I didn't even have to ask to buy a bike, but rather, ask to sell one!!! It did help that we just had another ultrasound done for our soon to be daughter.

You're getting the Arai RX Q right? ...... In the UK that's known as the Quantum. It's in Arai's latest upper range of road lids (as opposed to the race inspired replicas). I can only say that you'll love it .... if you have the same shaped head as me. Always go with fit and comfort first as this will lead to enhanced safety. Arai are first rate (not in the Sharp ratings but those aren't entirely conclusive). The larger visor aperture is a welcome improvement providing increased visibilty. If it fits you well you'll like it. BTW Arai generally aren't the quietest of helmets. Having said that, the Tour X3 is. What colour have you gone for?

I jest, she's mostly ok with my renewed fascination with all things two wheeled and its' associated expense. No deposit has been placed, but it's getting harder to resist. ;D Sounds like you got it good!

You'll have to update us once your resistance gets so low that you actually put the deposit down! ;D

I think the color was called silver frost. I told the sales guy that I preferred a color in the RX-Q series that is most likely to be seen by drivers. None of the colors in that series really seem to stand out, though. He offered his perspective, which was opposite of mine in that he preferred to blend into the environment. I thought, ok, here comes some kind of outlaw motorcycle bravado philosophy. His explanation, cops can't see you if you blend and it's easier to lose them if they do spot you.

Personally, I'm not interested in doing anything on a motorcycle that will make it harder for myself or others to own bikes in the future. Anyway, the Arai was the most comfortable, but I'd like to avoid earplugs if I can. I'll look into the Tour X3.

I did take a look at the X3, but it looks more like a moto helmet. I'm really only planning to ride the tenere as a daily rider and long tourer, on the tarmac and some dirt roads, so I think the RX-Q will be better for me. According to this guy it's not a replacement for the Quantum, rather an evolution of the corsair. Honestly, it's all greek to me-it just felt best on my head.

Also, took back the crap boots I got and exchanged for something more crap, which will go back tomorrow. Not sure I'll go to Cyxxe Gear again.
