Getting ready to pull off the Tourance EXPs and put on some Trail Attacks. I would like to put on aluminum valve stems so I can run a TPMS.

Does anybody know of aluminum valve stems that work with our wheels?

Thanks in advance,

Lisa

Cross referencing from the above site and the ST parts manual, the ST uses the very common 11.3mm (.453") hole size valve stems.

However you cannot use the nice, low profile 83 degree stems on the front rim, due to the dual spoke flange. And I remember from another post that the rear flange had to be slightly relieved to get a metal stem to fit correctly since it was pretty close fit.

D-T...I had my dealer install metal valve stems back when they did the first tire change. They have Parts Unlimited VS-1218R listed in the work order as the part number.

Should have gone for the metal valve stems but I went for the TP checker - bought from Amazon, installed in wheels by dealer... I just installed the display and no rear tire pressure.

I ended up mounting the display on the brake master cylinder and it is really dim and hard to see.

I don't know what I am going to do about the rear tire sensor... but I'm not recommending the TP Checker.

Thanks for all the replies.

My TPChecker works great, the mounting angle of the display unit greatly affects the screens brightness. It is possible to break the sensor if care is not used when mounting the tire. This is the 2nd bike I have used a TPMS on with about 90,000 troublefree miles.
Great unit, especially for $130.

Bill,
Is this the same PN for front and rear? Are you having any issues such as leakage since switching to these?
Thanks

The front and rear valve stems use the same Yamaha part, so if this one works in one rim it should work in the other.

My only concern is that according the Yamaha parts manual, the ST uses a common TR412 valve stem, which fits in a .453" hole (according to my reference material). The VS-1218R is designed for .327" - .339" holes.

I have not measured the valve stem hole myself, but will when I change tires, as I don't care much for rubber valve stems.

I have an appointment at Yukon Yamaha to have tires installed on Friday. I'll have them look at this and report back.

I've had the metal stems in for about 11K miles now and haven't had any noticeable leaks. I do have to add a few psi from time to time, but I air them down, and then back up, once a month or so when I ride on soft surfaces, so I may not be seeing a longer term leak. Of course if there's to be a problem, it will probably happen out here in the middle of nowhere, 3,000 miles from home.

Steve and Bill thanks for the info and I look forward to hearing what you guys find out. I will be in the market for new rubber soon as the wear bars have just started poking their little heads up on my rear tire and some on my front. I'm still running factory Battlewings and will go with them again but would like to switch to alum valve stems in the process of mounting up tires. Please keep us posted.
Regards, Vince

I know rubber ones can crack but I have always just replaced and these are hid a little bit by the rim so is a metal one really that important, do all the Dakar racers have metal?
Just asking if anyone has ripped one loose or had one on the Tenere crack to leak.
Also wouldnt it be easier to get a replacement rubber one into the rim than have to do a metal one on the trail?
I dont know just asking

Vince, how many miles do you have on the Battle Wings? Also have you done mixed riding( rain, off road)?
I put on the Conti Trail Attacks and the rear is close to being replaced. Only about 8,000 miles. The front looks good. I have just returned from a trip to CO and the heat getting there and coming back was, well HOT.. I think the rear should have gone further. Oh well.

Hey Jim I'm about 6,000 miles or a little past that on the BW. I'm going to continue running this set a bit longer and keep an eye on them. I run strickly road surface, (highway country, and the burbs). The BW have held up rather well in all weather and the traction is still good on this set. M/C Superstore is running good deals on them with free shipping. I'm also running a rear fender so I know for sure the BW will fit with no rubbing of the fender so that is another reason to stick with them.

Hello vince, thanks for the info. I think I will stay with the Trail Attacks. They have been really nice tires with excellent grip.
I like to run matched tires and the front has plenty left on it.
