I am finally going to purchase a skid plate. What are the plus' and minus' of these three skid plates. There are sooo many pages of discussion on skid plates and I am lazy. What is your opinion?

I've got the AltRider and it's pretty robust. I think I whacked it either running through a creek bed or off a tall curb at the gym. Creek bed sounds more ADV so lets go with that. Anyway, It only took on a couple scratches and small dent. The downside of this is I feel like it hangs pretty low. Maybe they all do. I don't know. Also, oil change can be done with the plate installed, but a filter change requires removal if you'vd got the yamaha filter and that's a bit of a hassle.

Overall good though. Does it's job.

I've got the SW Motech and it is more of a plate to keep the rocks off of the oil filter. Really depends on how rough of riding that you are going to do. RumBux can take just about anything because of where it mounts up to.

I've been happy with be sw motech plate. Easy on and off. Seems beefy and strong. Also have received great support from twisted throttle

Love my Altrider. Landed on it hard in the fall jumped a small rise fully loaded. Zero problems.

I have been VERY pleased with all of my Altrider gear and service. Skidplate, crash bars, Rox risers, and kick stand plate.

Can only speak for the AltRider skid plate.. I love mine, form and function are great. Only takes me 5-10 mins to remove for oil changes or cleaning the bike.. Missed out on the last Baja 1000 ;) but for my needs it works perfect.

With all the discussion on issues with sump mounted plates I wouldn't recommend any of the three you mention.
If you're going to spend the dineros on a new plate, buy Jaxon's, ADC, or Rumbox.

Dang, I thought I was the only one who had not pulled the trigger on a skid plate. ??? After all the talk leading up to getting the bikes I never made a decision on which one was best. Just knew i did not want it to bolt to the sump and had to have a back mount that had a bracket attached to the frame. After the 9,000 mile Prudhoe bay and back trip without a skid plate i was beginning to wonder if i needed one. In reality that trip is pretty tame relative to "rocks". With the Colorado Gathering coming up (still a maybe for me) I have started thinking about it again.

Problem with the Rumbux is that it is a system and you have to have the bars to mounting the plate. Already have bars that I am happy with. Jackson's is beautiful and stout but more than my budget can handle. If money were no object that would be my choice

Will follow this thread to see if it helps me make my decision

Rumbux lowers only, are independent of your current uppers.

However, I'm not sure which uppers they don't conflict with.
They go with Givi uppers easily.

Love my AltRider skid plate. Looks good, appears it will provide adequate protection for the types of conditions that I will get into given the size of this bike. Its not like I am going to be riding into rock piles and serious single track on anything that weights in excess of 600 lbs. If I am doing that I will be on my 450 which is 300 lbs lighter.

Well I just ordered a SW Motech skid plate and the ALTRider crash bars. I will let you know how it works out by say....Julyish. That should give me plenty of off road miles to give an opinion. I sure hope there isn't any conflicts with the combo I ordered. It didn't look like there would be when I researched them. ::024::
