So it's not for locating the crash bars, it's for locating the radiator. Interesting. I didn't notice the radiator moving around at all, but then I wasn't looking for it either - I was struggling to install the bars solo, so I kinda had my hands full. :) It certainly didn't move very far.

After waiting to get around to it since Thanksgiving, I finally installed the AltRider crashbars on Friday night. The bars were very well packed for shipping, and the instructions were straightforward. There was one minor error in the instructions - you will need a 19mm socket to install the replacement bolts at the center of the crashbars, not 17mm as stated. The OEM 17mm bolts were very tight and took a fair bit of force to loosen.

It took me longer to get the sticky backed bubble wrap off the bars than it did to install them - total time working on my own was just a hair under 15 minutes.

It helps to have a long hex wrench, particularly for the front left crashbar bolt. I used a 3/8" driver with extension and a torx bit to speed the process up after loosening with the hex.

I had a set of Metal Mule bars on my 800 GS, and am impressed with what appears to be the far higher quality of the welds and finish of the AltRider bars. I hope not to test them, but if I do (and survive) I'll post results.

I also just installed my new SW-Motech Crash Bars (thanks to the gang at Twisted Throttle!!!) and they went on easily. They look great and it took me (unskilled labor) 20 minutes for both sides.

Just in case someone is still looking for crash bars.

Wow, we have an ace fabricator that commented earlier in the threard on how well made they are and how good they look....yet we still have comments like this. Guess who I'm gonna listen to. If you actually read the entire thread, you might get some insight as to why there are shaped that way. Hint, it was done for a good reason...so how about reading a little.
Since I am the one that started this thread I have to say the fabrication on them is very good. The functionality is good the design on them needs a little work they could have made them symmetrical and still had all the functionality
