Further Update 3/13/12:

I sent ATX an email yesterday explaining my issue and I attached the picture showing the problem.

This morning I received a call from a nice lady interested in my problem, and like those of you that have the same helmet, she is mystified as, "this has never happened before" Of course the fact that I attached my Scala G4 base to the helmet will make the helmet non-returnable (I get it, my fault). She did offer to send me another shield to try, though I am not holding out much hope.

Overall I give ATX high marks for getting back to me in less than 24hours with a human that was empowered to help solve the problem.

I like the helmet and hope somehow this new shield solves the issue. Stay tuned.

The company sent me a new shield as promised within about 4 days. I installed the new shield and it is better. It sits closer to the seal on the helmet but still does not seal. I haven't seen anyone else with this issue yet so I chalk it up to a "one off" issue.

The reason I bought this helmet was that I wanted to have a visor to block the sun when riding west into the sun in the evenings. The visor is so high on this helmet that it really doesn't serve the purpose I was looking for.

However I have since found a sun visor that fits against the inside of the shield on my Shoei and is exactly what I was looking for. It cost $16 but I have since read on WebBikeWorld that others have bought sun blocking film and cut it to fit for much less. It is about an inch and a half that sits slightly above my field of vision and allows me to tilt my head slightly to block the sun almost until sundown as you can see through it.

If I understand you right I use about two strips of electrical tape on the shield it's self to do the same thing. Just cover about the top two inches or so and it's better at blocking the sun.

I guess that would work, the advantage of the film is that you can see through it, so it doesn't block your vision totally in that area of your helmet.

First I did get some film from Autozone that they use on car front windshields. I cut some strips out and soap/water adhesive them to the shield. I did a couple of long trips out west ( MotoGP at Laguna Seca and Sturgis among others) like that and felt like there was less eye strain with complete opacification with only slight loss of field of view. YMMV

Re: AFX-39 DS Helmet issues

::026:: Super Visors work for me. I have them on both of my full-face helmets, really can't stand the sun in my eyes or having to tilt my head down and look up. A word of caution about installing the Super Visor - make sure you bend it (heat helps) to fit the shape of your helmet shield. I didn't do this on my HJC and it causes the shield to flex away from the seal and let in too much air. For me, the only drawback of the Super Visor is that it goes up when you raise your shield, which you often have to do at stops on very hot or cold days. That's why I went with a Dual Sport style helmet.

I'm still disappointed with the buzzy vibration from the AFX FS-39 DS on the Super Ténéré. It's starting to look like the turbulence in the "cockpit" causes the bill to flex. Based on a suggestion from Stevespd in dealing with a similar problem on his Arai DS helmet, I added some foam tape as a dampener to the underside, leading edge of the bill. This helped a tiny bit, so maybe more tape will help some more. I really want to like this helmet.

+2 on the the upper corners of the shield needing sun blockage. I will use dark tint for that as I have done on other helmets.

The last thing to make this helmet a real contender would be chin spoiler, or whatever you call a piece of fabric on the front, bottom portion of the helmet that reduces updraft. Unfortunately, the foam liner is glued to the shell, so you can't just slip something in between. I haven't figured a solution for this yet, and the first person to suggest duct tape...
