Adding mounting hooks to the top of the OEM panniers?

Is there a way to add mounting hooks to the top of the OEM pannier while still keeping it waterproof? Has anyone done this before or know of a kit for this? I'm tired of using the handles as mounting points and having to unhook everything that I stacked ontop of the case just so I can open it.

I could add them myself but I'm not so sure of the structural integrity of the top plastic if I drill into it.

No kits that I've seen....

You can risk using adhesives and not penetrate the case....

Or just drill through and mount it securely with rubber washers and some clear silicone. You can do it! I believe in you! ::012::

Use a large metal washer on the inside to spread the load

I'm not toying with adhesives.

And thank you for pointing out my glaring flaw. Washers are the secret! I forgot that the top of the lid is a honeycomb design so I can just drill through the center of one of the combs and use a washer to disburse weight across the ridges.

Seeing as that's dealt with, I need to find some good loops that have a screw-on base. Anyone know where I can get these things? Looking for a cool pair. I'm not going to use a drawer handle.

@Limey: Where did you get your lid loops from? Link would be helpful.

@Ron: I checked Fastenal but all I've found are really large handles at ~$4 a piece which is too much for me.

If you decide to do this, you'd need to watch the weight of the items you strap to the top of the bags down. The lids are not really designed to take loads and the lock in the back is plastic and flimsy. A couple pound load strapped to the bag lid is going to exert many times this force on the latch as it bounces up/down over terrain.

The Yamaha bags are great light-duty bags, but they're really not amenable to the sorts of mods that folks do to the solid alum panniers.

Yup, black RTV and stainless steel fasteners, not plated steel.

How about a top rack? I have a Givi top rack mounted on my Givi V46 top case. Givi produce many top cases and perhaps you could find one that fits nicely on the OEM top case.

I used Strap works Footman loops. Drilled and used machine screws with nylok nuts. Used a Dremel to grind away any of the honeycomb plastic in the way. RTV silicon to seal. Fitted Roc Straps. Work great. You can see bags lashed to the top of the panniers in my Avatar. ;D

I used some previously from Strapworks and they rusted. Unless they've added stainless or brass, Helios is in the Land of Boat Supply Stores and ought to easily be able to find some noncorrosive ones.
