I finally got around to add a lockable, waterproof top case. I didn't want the Yamaha one due to price and size. Too big and boxy to me.

But I needed something big enough to hold my laptop, gun, etc...

Instead of a Pelican case $$$, I went with a gun case from Wally world that only cost $45.00 even though the website says $80! :)

Having it detach was a challenge (without buying a $150+ 3rd party mounting system.) so here is what I came up with.

BTW, I am mounting it to a AltRider rack which worked out perfect due to the cut outs they already have.

What I did was use some bolts with a washer that the bolt head would go through the hole in the rack and slide forward to grab on to the rack. I had the bolts go through the case, caulked and cut short. I did have to modify the rack a bit to have room for the bolt head to go through the rack at the same time.
and then be able to slide forward.

One issue I had was that the square part of the bolt head (where the washer would stop) didn't give me a big enough gap to have the rack slide in. I took the inside of the bolt head to a grinder and made it a bit thinner to fit.

To keep the case in place and not slide out and off, I used a window lock, mounted it the rack underneath with an L Plate. The locking post fit perfect through the cut in the alt rider rack. This keeps it from sliding off or anyone taking it. Honestly, if they really really wanted it, I guess they could bend the case some but its better than not locked.

So to remove the case you just put the key in the window lock underneath, the post comes down and pull the case off.

I just need to clean it up a bit, trim some of the metal and paint it all black and I should be good to go.

One thing nice about the case is that it already has the locks built into it.
and it was $45.00

the lock was about $7.00, bolts and washers probably $10 max. L Plate was about $3.

So $65 for a waterproof removable top case isn't too bad.

Hope the pictures below help.

We must have started something with this post. My local Wally World does not have in stock and the only jumped from $93.99 to $108.99, still less than the OEM from Yamaha... Thanks for the tip.

I finally got my case some time last week. I didn't make it removable. I just screwed it to the tail rack, I did replace the two front screws that fit into the sub-frame with longer ones. The case does wobble a little (this is my first hard case, so I'm not sure if it's more than normal or not). But so far I'm happy.

If y'all can't find these cheapo cases, then take a look at Seahorse cases. Their website has been jacked up the past couple days but a 3rd party has them in stock. They're just like Pelican cases but considerably cheaper and far from crap. There are a couple people on the Ninja 650 forum I post on that use them and love them.
