I’m heading out in a little over a week on a 3,900 mile loop from Denver to the PNW, then down the coast and across the desert.

I thought I had ordered some Liquid Moly 20w-50, but accidentally ordered the 15w-50.

Am I ok to run that vs the 20w for the trip? My gut tells me yes since I can run both 10w and 20w, but would like thoughts from other S10 drivers…

I can always order the 20w-50 for the trip and then run the 15W when I get back home for the rest of the summer…

TIA,
Gritz

You're fine. That is a better temperature range oil than 20/50 according to Yamaha. You are likely to see Temps lower than 50F and you should not run 20/50 lower than that. 15/40 goes down to 30° and the 50 goes to whatever you will see on the high end20230709_135244.jpg

That was my thought too, just didn't see a specific 15-50 on the chart, but the numbers jive. I went with the thicker 50 since the desert on hwy50 might be a bit on the warm side and I'll be eating miles.

I have run a few Honda Motorcycles in the SW in the summer from 29°F to 115°F all on 10W/40. I used to worry about 20/50 but now run 10/40.

I wouldn't expect you to see too many below freezing temps at this time of the year. (yeah, I know the mountain peaks are still cold)

Middle of June or July I have run in lower. Even camped and it hit 28°. You never know!

Oh, I know. Went to Pikes Peak a couple years ago in the Jeep. Was planning on folding the top back and enjoying the scenery. It was August. Imagine my surprise when it was 20°-something at the top. But, to run into those temps, altitude is the key.
