ABS light

So I decided to take my bike in for the headlight recall, while it was there I asked them to look at the brakes.

I have an intermittent problem where after the bike sites overnight or for a couple days the front brake lever travels almost to the bar before grabbing like it had air in the system. But it is a nice firm pull every time while riding.

So while looking at it they told me my ABS system wasn't functioning properly! Apparently at start-up the ABS light comes on for a few seconds, then it is supposed to turn off, however mine never turned off until i rode a few feet. I figured it was like the BMW/Honda systems that function this way and mine has done it since day one mile zero.

Just a heads up about the ABS light, if yours stays on till you ride it may need a new ECU module. The ABS still functioned properly even though it isn't 100% right.

Just giving you guys a heads up.

Mine turns on as the the key is turned on and dash goes through it's diagnostic, then goes off.
Turns on again as the start button is pushed, then goes off after a few seconds of engine running.
I have never seen it on as I take off.

2012 model.

If it is a 13 or 14 model, the light goes off once the bike is ridden at 4-6 mph if there is no problem with the ABS system (per the service manual). The 12 goes out without the bike having to move.

Works like it should.. Don't feel bad though… My Ducati Diavel does the same thing and people were posting on that forum about an "issue" with the ABS light...

I didn't think it was an issue, dealer did.

The issue I had was occasional extra long pull after bike sat for a few hours, that led the dealer to discover the ABS thing. Thanks for the update, and I will talk to the mechanic Monday hopefully about it with owners manual in hand.

Thanks for the advice here, got the bike back a few days ago but havn't had a chance to really ride it other than 2 miles home.

So the Yamaha corporate tech they called, and service manual must not have been updated from 2012's because all their literature says the light should go off. Now this dealer and I are more educated, and they were glad to get the help from my end!

The brake travel issue I was having was unrelated, they found that the initial dealer did not tighten the front axle up all the way, and it had worked a bit loose!! ??? ???

Now that has been fixed and I'm just waiting on the Elka shock to come back from Canada. A bit frustrated with them right now, but that's another story.

I don't know about the 2013 service manual, but the 2014 manual says exactly what I posted above, it should go out at 4-6 MPH if there is no malfunction.

2013 is the previous generation bike, so it's not surprising that if they changed the brake system a year early that the service manual for 2012s is still in use on them for most things. However the owners manual that came with the bike has the correct stuff in it.
