It looks like I will try my hand at a trip report. o_O

What a crazy week it has been! After a few months of rough planning, I would meet two other riders in southern Utah for a three-day tour of south-central Utah. Getting across the Rockies in early spring is always a gamble, and this trip proved to be no different, I pulled out of my garage at 7 am to light snow, but as I headed across Denver towards Hwy 285, the snow shifted to mist and fog, then the temps started to drop. By the time I reached Conifer, Colorado, 1hr later, the temps had dropped to 23*, and the freezing fog was leaving me and my Super Tenere covered in a rapidly growing layer of ice. I pulled off in Conifer to warm up over coffee and check the weather & road conditions.

Thankfully, I got out of the inversion about 10 miles further up the mountain, and the fog disappeared, replaced by the glorious Colorado sun. For the next 7 hours, I ripped across some of the best roads in southern Colorado as I headed toward Utah. When I arrived in Utah, it was in the low 80s and sunny! What a difference a few hundred miles makes.

It wasn't an excellent site for Utah, but a great restaurant was nearby, so I was happy.

I love waking up to this view.

Friday morning, we learned that our third riders flight was delayed last night, and he was running behind. So we decided to set a new rendezvous location in Hankville, and Brian and I took off into the Valley of the Gods and climbed the Moki Dugway. It had been a few years since I had last done this route on my 2013 R1200GS, but I could already tell that I liked the Super Tenere's suspension and overall steering feel much more than my old BMW.

We then headed over to Bears Ears, where we began to encounter Snow above 8500'. The Snow drifts were manageable, but sure enough, on the last major drift, I hit some of that famous Utah mud and lost all traction to terra firma while exiting the drift. Holy F' the Super Tenere is hard to pick up in zero-traction mud :p

The landscape transitions as we worked our way down from Bears Ears toward Hite, UT, were spectacular.

Due to the snow we encountered earlier in the day, we decided to scrap our route through the Henry's because it would take us up to 9400' and felt very likely that it would hit unpassable conditions.

After meeting with our 3rd rider in Hanksville, we headed further SW and connected with the Burr Trail. Sand started becoming more prevalent, with depths up to 8-12 inches, causing the front end to get super squirrely. I had been running 32psi in my front Dunlop Trailmax Mission tire, but dropping it down to 28psi significantly improved the overall grip from the front end. Did I still want full knobs? Yeah, but overall, I am super excited about their performance.

We made it to one of my favorite primitive campsites in all of Utah that night.IMG_9118.jpeg

The next morning, we began heading north along the Capital Reef.

As we headed to the edge of the San Rafel Swell, the sand started to get legit. My companions were starting to struggle, and the pass started to drop. We made the detour to visit a Butch Cassidy signature. I like to think it's real, and the location is definitely right.

Sunday morning, I broke camp and started the ride home from Utah to Denver on I-70 over the Rockies. This turned into the coldest continuous ride of my life. It was around 30* when I left, but it got down to the teens over both Vail Pass and the Eisenhower tunnel. Even with my heated jacket and HippoHands, I was so freakin cold when I got home.

Thanks for the write up. It’s great hearing other people’s adventures in foreign lands. It’s been a long, long time since I laast rode in snow and ice. Not part of the climate where I live these days.

TBH, I was so impressed with how well the Super Tenere handles sand. Dunlop TMM are not the ideal tire for deep sand, yet I could easily maneuver (low speed) through deep sand. Once at speed, with the weight off the front tire, I could steer via pegs as well, or better, than any other motorcycle I have tried.
