I had my gen 1 flashed a few years ago. It still has a 2000 rpm surge that I hate. However it is easier to ride and I would do it again.
Avalanche 123, I would suggest you install the Booster Plug. It is a simple plug-in device that tricks the ECU into thinking its much colder outside thus richening the fuel mixture. Please see their claims on their website. I can only speak for the CA 2017 model I own but it made a significant difference in smoothing out the running of my S10. I amazed more S10 owners continue to discuss flashing their ECU's when this plug in device works very well.Canadian owner here. 2018. I have 9000 miles on my bike (15000km) and the twitchy throttle is not only bothersome but almost dangerous when maneuvering slowly in a parking lot for example. I am very aware of it and even being a seasoned rider, it is my only dislike with the ST. (My other bikes were HD's and I converted last year.)
Being Canadian I don't think there is an easy fix. I have read the horror stories however if there are any suggestions to help remedy this for a Canadian bike, please let me know....and it's not about calibrating my wrist. 90% of my riding has been in T mode as well.
Again, you have a bike from California, the birth place of all the emissions control lol. I will look into it but....I am skeptical it will work with a Canadian bike.... I installed a 'booster plug' on my 2016 FZ-1 which made some improvement on the throttle response, but it drastically affected my fuel economy. It was so bad, that I un-installed it couple of weeks later. Maybe I had a defective 'B-Plug' or just very sensitive fuel map on my bike ...

I did check out their website. I agree it looks like it will work. My local dealer is a friend of mine so I am going to ask him for his opinion and possible fixes. I have no issues purchasing a Booster Plug but I'll need to know if it affects warranty etc.kmasa58,
I have 6,000 miles on my S10 since installing the Booster Plug and have been averaging 47 mpg.
Avalanche 123,
Read their website, they have a money back guarantee. The symptoms you mention could indicate a lean fuel mixture.
The Booster Plug installs between the airbox and ECU, simple plug-in. I checked with several dealers in my area and none of them had a clue for the occasional stalling and jerky performance of my S10. I had adjusted the R. TB to 3/4 turns out and did a TB balance which helped a little. The dealer said if they worked on it they would have to adjust it back to the original setting. I was desperate for a fix. At 1,000 miles I installed the Booster Plug and it greatly improved the machine. Effect warrantee, I'm sure a re-flash may do that. Thanks Riley, It looks to be a little "gimmicky". OTOH, it is fully reversible. And not a bad price. The only issue I have with my bike is once in a while I stall it when letting out the clutch from a stop. I figured it's just from poor clutch use on my part. The Booster Plug installs between the airbox and ECU, simple plug-in. Yes, does sound "gimmicky" but the principle is sound. I liked the idea of a plug in installation that was easily reversible, not too expensive, and supported with a money back guarantee (though that doesn't help a lot since it comes from Denmark). Thanks Riley, It looks to be a little "gimmicky". And seeing you are from Orange County, you have the smogged CA model like me. One thing that's noted on the website is the ambient temperature showing on the gauge is going to show 35 deg colder than it actually is on your dashboard display. No biggie. You can just remove it from the display options and put something else there.
Problem with the re-flash is you are stuck with it once it's done. IMO the very best way to get performance is take to be dyno tuned. But that is some big bucks.
Have you removed as much slack from the throttle cable as possible? This really helps people control the throttle more evenly.Canadian owner here. 2018. No I haven’t but it’s worth looking into. I talked to my Dealer today and they said I could try the Booster Plug and if any warranty work was required, they would reset to stock so warranty wasn’t affected. Interestingly Yamaha doesn’t have the ability to tune that ECU. They just do diagnostics for codes. As a previous HD only, if u didn’t want to dump, u could buy canned maps. Too bad that’s not available from Yamaha.Have you removed as much slack from the throttle cable as possible? This really helps people control the throttle more evenly.
HD and KTM seem to be some of the few that do factory firmware changes or different maps.No I haven’t but it’s worth looking into. Believe it or not some guys do take it in deep sand. I followed a guy though the pine barrens my first time off road I buried my V Strom past the calipers he just blew right through it on an S10. Took me 4.5 years but I've got mine now.Deep sand wash on a 600lb bike
Shame you haven't tried a Gen II with Chris Stillman's dyno-developed flash. Huge increase in performance for just 199 quid.I have a Booster Plug fitted to 08 Fireblade, which were known for being a bit twitchy from just on to off . It has helped a lot when doing low speed manoeuvres, tight downhill hairpins etc and the fuel consumption has not changed either.
For me the S10 (18 model) is fine, yes the throttle is sensitive but compared to a lighter bike with more power ie the Blade, it works very well.
I think if I was coming from a slower and heavier bike the S10's throttle would feel twitchy and would fit a Booster Plug with a softer throttle cam as mentioned above.
