Just returned from my annual summer tour to WeSTOC. This is a rally for Honda ST (1100 & 1300) owners that I've been a member of for a long time. www.westoc.org This year I rode my '15 Super - T because the ST1300 is sick in the garage with a misfiring problem. The rally moves around the western US with this year's event held in Spokane Valley, WA. The location could be more aptly named "Smokane" Valley considering all the fires currently burning across the state.

My Super - T was equipped with the factory tall shield, factory Yamaha side cases and a Givi Trekker Outback 42L top case. I also farkled in a StarCom1 advance, Escort Redline Radar detector, Garmin Zumo 550 with XM (still works for me). I also had a Road Gear jumbo magnetic tank pad and dry bag with tools strapped to the back seat.

Left Ventura, CA Friday Morning 8/21 with the first night's stop in Mesquite, NV. From there it was on to Lehi, UT for night 2 via Zion and UT 12 and Torrey. If you haven't been there, check out the gourmet food at the Cafe Diablo on UT24 just west of Torrey. The rattle snake cake appetizers are highly recommended. Night 3 was spent in Salmon, ID at the Sacagawea, Inn. Nothing special but the $3 breakfast is a good deal. For dinner I recommend Bertram's Brewhouse. Good steaks and micro-brew beers.

We arrived in Spokane Valley on Monday the 24th and spent the week there through Thursday night at the WeSTOC rally doing day rides around Lake Coeur d'Alenee and the St Joe highway. Even did a few miles of gravel road, heavily washboard though. The bike handled it OK but I need a stronger mount for the radar detector or to remove it for such conditions. There was a lot of interest from the ST community in the Super - T.

On Friday morning, having fewer days for the return trip, I made my way to Burns Oregon for Friday night and Minden for the final night arriving back in Ventura last night.

For a guy used to riding Honda STs for the past 20 years, I was pleasantly surprised how good a long-distance sport touring mount the the Super - T is. The bike never missed a beat and gave no problems at all. My only real complaint is a relative lack of wind protection that made itself evident during Saturday's ride from Burns to Minden. There were constant cross winds of +50 MPH, really tiring. The thing is also very mechanically noisy and it would be nice if Yamaha could reduce the clatter and amplify the exhaust a little.

Some stats: Effectively doubled the the mileage on the bike, averaged about 46 MPG over the trip, which would have been better except for that day of cross winds, which drove the average down several MPGs. In spite of 100+ degree temperatures, in Nevada and Utah and 80 MPH speed limits, at those temperatures in much of Utah, the engine appears to have used nary a drop of oil. I changed to Castrol 4-T 10w-50 full synthetic in anticipation of the extreme conditions. Also fitted a Mobil 1 M-108 filter.

All in all I give the Super - T a two thumbs up for this kind of touring.

The main farkle that you are missing are the side wind deflectors. They make a world of difference. My bike gives me much more protection thank streetglide.

+1 on the side wind deflectors. Also added a Parabellum windshield (http://parabellum.com/Super-Tenere-Replacement-Windshield-P79.aspx) which made my Super-T just as easy on the road as my old Honda ST1100. The final bit of kit was an AirHawk medium cruiser air seat pad which makes the Super-T even better than my old Honda. http://amzn.to/1MZ16oC

Side winds can be tiring regardless of which bike you're on. It's pretty amazing though to ride 500+ miles to a forest in comfort and then spend 4-5 days on forest roads and Discovery Routes and then ride 500+ miles back home all on the same bike.

I also have found the S10 a brilliant tourer .. regarding the noise from the engine, while riding i put my hand over the gap at the front of the petrol tank ,just under the handle bars and the noise stopped straight away. .so the tank and the fairing are actually funneling the noise up towards the rider, but i have never found it a problem .....i have wind deflectors and a givi airflow adjustable screen fitted to mine and get no wind noise or buffeting at all .

I find that the side wind deflectors help to stabilize the bike at highway speeds, especially if you turn the AC on high (100+). I rode my 2012 without them for less than a week before I bought a set. Won't do without them again.

I had a miss-firing problem with my ST1300, 'turned out to be the mouse nest in the V which had used part of the wiring harness for padding. That (and the bill to fix it) convinced me it might not be the best bike to be keeping down at my hobby farm which is how I wound up trading it a couple of weeks before a trip to the west coast for an S10. I really wasn't sure how the S10 would due vs the ST1300 for sustained long distance duty. 'Turns out it does quite well. It is not as smooth, or as powerful, nor does it have the full body tupperware air management. As you found, however, it is quite comfortable, cooler, and you just never get tired of electronic cruise on those 800 mile days. In heavy cross-winds I also found it to be more stable than the ST, 'less sail area for the wind to catch I would imagine. And as I guy who took his fully loaded ST1300 down the Valley of the Gods road in Southern Utah last year, it is 100% better off road too :). You really should look into a bigger screen. I fitted a Parabellum tall just before I left and the difference was striking. I still miss the electric screen on the ST but I doubt I would miss it as much as the electric cruise on the S10. 'Both are great bikes but given the flexibility the S10 provides the modest trade offs are reasonable.

Good ride report!, hope you continue your travels across the U.S. I have found my Tenere to be an excellent all around touring bike especially with it's rough road capibility. Some of the beautiful places I have seen on the dirt roads of Montana, Utah, Idaho, West Va and Nova Scotia would not have easily doable on a strictly road bike. The S10 has been flawless so far thru 61,000+ miles, 44 states and Canada. Having confidence that one's bike will get them back home with no issues greatly adds to the pleasure of long distance touring. Plan a coast to coast and go for it!! 8)

A coast to coast and Alaska are on my bucket list and are in part why I bought the Super - T. Until I retire in the next 2-3 years, I just don't have the vacation time to pursue those longer trips.

Nice ride and good report Jeff. I live in Malta, which is a tiny island, and therefore do not get the opportunity to just go on a long ride. I take my 2013 S10 by ferry to continental Europe around 2 or 3 times a year. Although the ferry crossing takes less than 2 hours, it's still going overseas with all the preparations of bookings etc.

Added my route. I made this map from the tracking points on SpotWalla. Note that the first day or so, my findmespot page was not communicating with SpotWalla due to a set up error on my part. I was later able to correct it on the road. The roughly counter clockwise loop should both start and finish in Ventura,CA.

Next trip I hope is with more time and less highways...
