I figured it was time to check my gas mileage. I live where I can buy non-ethnol high test gas. I filled my bike up at the same station/pump/gas level in the tank. Drove around New York and Massachusetts on all kind of small paved roads and a lot of interstate driving. My maximum top speed, according to my GPS was 78 mph. I would say that this would be a typical kind of travel for me.
I was very careful to make sure that I used the GPS odometer and filled the tank to the exact same place on the neck of the tank. Overall mileage was around 500 miles and averaged 50.1 miles per gallon. I think that this is very good for a bike that is heavy with a 220 pound rider...plus gear.
I have no idea how much of a reduction in mileage will result when I put on my TRAX boxes and top box.
I now have 6,000 miles, or so, on my 2014ES. I do tend to use the cruise control a lot. It helps my aging wrist. The bike shifts perfectly and the motor has smoothed out and is a treat to drive. I will probably drive out to California, to see my old friend, in September if the whole state has not burned down by then.
After four BMW's in two years I think this bike will be with me for a long time....or...until the extended four year warranty is over!!
I know that people complain that this bike does not have "enough" horse power but to be honest...I really do not see where it would really make that big of a difference. After owning 30 or so bikes this one is...very nice.

Curious as to what the average is on your bikes computer.

I keep thinking I need to manually check mine, but I am just too lazy

When you put the boxes on your fuel economy will drop to about 19 mpg... :D *Kidding*

You'll notice the difference, but it won't make you cry too much.

Curious - how many fill ups did you make to reach 500 miles?

I'm glad you made this post Mr. Pete, I wanted to start a hypermiling thread... With the cool real time fuel economy telemetry, and the surprising economy the Super Ténéré is capable of I think it would be fun to see just how good it can get -- and what adjustments in windscreen, rider position, panniers, and technique can do.

One thing that surprises me is how good the economy is on my Super Ténéré when I lug the engine, amazing even -- even heavy on the throttle at low RPM I can easily see 60 mpg and better. But is the real-time display accurate? And if the economy really is that good chugging this bike like a tractor, is piston pressure an issue for the S-10's mill run like this?

I highly doubt it. Typically displays like that are calculating a rolling average, not a true real-time number. Bottom line, is they aren't usually accurate.

Treat it like a trend and hand calculate and you'll be on track.

Well as I assume you know there is an average display and a separate real-time display, it seems that one obviates the other if what you say is true. It also seems unlikely that Yamaha would use some simple vacuum based MEMS sensor with a crude fuel algorithm, when their fueling system uses an advanced metering and measurement system that has even more precision and accuracy. Anyone actually know? Any Yamaha Gold YTA Certified Technicians here?

More on track: what's the best fuel economy you (whoever is reading this) have actually measured (at the pump with your odometer)? I've managed 55, and have been as low as 43... I'm trending to the lower number though being a bit heavy handed in avoiding traffic, and it's been windy here...

Fill up - Ride - Repeat ::008::

From observations I have made over the last 3 years I think my Speedo is 6-8% off (Tyre brand / wear seems to cause the variance) the Odo is more accurate at maybe 3% out.

Mpg, I am not so sure about, bound to be a little wrong, but not by much as it gives me a pretty good gauge of how far I can go on a tank, not that it matters to me, it could be mm per fuel drop or any other measurement I just know 40mpg means I am in trouble if I get caught and 60mpg means I am riding like an old woman.

I always run with the top box and can get as low as 40mpg if measured on a short blat down a well known road, and can top 60mpg if going slow in a straight line, across a full tank it is always upper 40's - low 50's depending on the types of roads.

Putting the Trax side cases on definitely knocks the fuel consumption, hard to be exact as how much as I only fit them when going on a long tour where the roads / riding style / pace are a bit different to normal riding. I can tell at low speed (like mountain roads where a days riding has average speeds of 30 - 40mph) there is little difference, but on fast motorways (indicated 85-90 mph cruising) I think it knocks it back from 49-50 to about 46-47 mpg.

I have checked my mpg manually on a few occasions and them cross checked it to the average mpg read out on the instrument panel and TBH there is very little difference, my bike now averages about 55mpg (road only) and that's good enough for me

I always reset the trip meter each time I fill up, so assuming that the on board reading on miles covered is accurate, I still get around 50 + ish mpg, I am aware that the speedometer is some 7% fast compared to my GPS, ;)

I have never looked at the mpg gauge on the bike. I will do so and see how it compares to the gps. I do notice that my speed is within one mile per hour of my gps. If the gps says 70 my speedo reads 69. I think this is the most accurate speed I have had an any bike I have ever owned. My 2012 vstrom was off by six miles per hour.

Most S10 riders report variation between GPS and speedometer reading greater than that, mine included.

You must have got lucky with your S10 ::012::

Starting with the 2014 model the speedometer is only off by 1 to 2 MPH, unlike the 2012 and 2013's that were off by 7 or so.
My 2014 actual fuel mileage averages in the mid to upper 40's but I can get over 50 MPG when keeping the speed down under 60 MPH.
Those numbers are here in the eastern US, cant wait to get back out west and see how close to 60 MPG I can achieve.
My mileage is always better when riding the Rocky Mtns, even at a brisk pace.

I was "very" surprised that the gps seed and the actual spedo speed was so close. Most of my bikes have had a much greater fluctuation than this bike. As I said...I "really" like this bike. My only complaint, which I commented a lot on this site, was the metal plate on the left hand side of the bike by ones foot. I caught my pant leg on it and fell over and separated my left shoulder when I hit the ground. I since have replaced the shaft drive protector with one that comes up and makes it impossible for this to happen. I bought it from Altrider...best investment so far for around fifty or so dollars. I would "strongly" suggest this item.

I check mine almost every time I feel up, I travel state why 50 to 60 mph by speedometer and show a consistant 49.5mpg this is using my odometer and the bike only has 3500 miles on it. It's a 2013 i bought brand new on may 2nd this year.

Yes, the speedo accuracy is one of the improvements in the Gen2 bikes.
Yamaha listened.

Not so with my 2014 ZE (ES) model speedo v GPS accuracy is on average 9% different ~ speedo reads fast ::008::

By my sat nav, 32 on speedo = 30 on satnav, 43 = 40 and 87 = 80. 127 on satnav = dunno on speedo? too busy looking at speed on satnav ::012::

I'm seeing high 40s to 50 MPG on the bike's on-board computer but calculating it the old fashioned way, I consistently get about 2 MPG less. This is with the Yamaha side cases mounted. Just installed Trekker Outback 42L top case so will have to see what effect that has on mileage.
