All us 200+ pounders with gear have their rear tire at 42psi?

one of the most mis-understood things is tire pressure. I run my tenere's rear at 44/45 I go by the heat-pressure rise method outlined in detail on ADVrider

I've been running 36 psi in the rear tire and while the ride is good and handling excellent, it is showing wear/flat spot with only 1600 miles...maybe I should run a higher PSI

My experience is that OM tire pressures are guidelines that are typically set at the highest pressure that you would reasonably run at the loads specified. This provides the best fuel mileage, the longest tire life, the most headroom for high speed cruising without tire overheating, and the biggest load carrying capacity. But it is seldom the optimal tire pressure for aggressive twisty riding or anything off pavement.

For off-road, lower is almost always better and it is truly amazing how much better a bike like the S10 will feel in the dirt with 25-30 psi rather than 36-42. Lower is even better, but you do increase the risk of wheel damage in rocky terrain and at some point (typically around 15 psi) rim locks start to become necessary. But there's a darn good reason trials riders run 4-6 psi!

In the end, it's about tradeoffs. You certainly want to run more pressure for higher speeds and loads. And if you want to get the best tire mileage, run the max allowed on the sidewall. But airing down a bit to get more heat in the tires helps for fast pavement riding (I'd run about 30-32 for a track day in the S10), and off-road, lower is almost always better.

If you ride the S10 off pavement and are at 42+ psi, you owe it to yourself to try 30, at least for a short period. Its transformational.

"Tire manufacturers spend a lot of time determining what pressures will provide the best compromise of performance and tire wear on the street. While some manufacturers recommend running the same pressures listed in the owner's manual for the bike's OE tires, a significant number-such as Metzeler and Pirelli-have proprietary pressures that should be run on particular tire/bike combinations. Be sure to ask your dealer or check the tire manufacturer's product literature for specific numbers. And check the pressure before every ride! Cory Johnson from Metzeler/Pirelli says between 75 and 80 percent of the tire warranty claims he reviews are caused by underinflation. When the cost of today's premium rubber is considered, investing in a good tire gauge-and using it religiously-is cheap insurance."

just put your 42 psi in measured cold. run an hour or so to get the tire up to temp, and measure again. about 8/10% pressure increase is allowed (4lbs) if it's higher than that, add a little. If it didn't gain any, you can let some out, if you want.
