Hey Guys,

With all the new motor breakin discussions going around, I was wondering is it ok to ride 2up while the bike only has 25 miles on it and still in breakin period ? is that too much load on the new motor to pull ?

Thanks.

Put it this way, if you're a 400# rider, that's equivalent to two 200# riders, and nothing says a 400# rider can't use the bike during the break in period.
Just ride it!!

The ideal break-in is lots of varying engine speeds and loads, but it is not a great idea to subject the engine to heavy continual loads early on as this leads to localized overheating of parts that have not yet established working clearances. I'd back off a bit from doing sustained high speeds and avoid long sustained grades when you're two-up, but otherwise, ride normally.

I'd also suggest not paying a whole lot of attention to Yamaha's very conservative engine break-in RPM recommendations, other than avoiding sustained high RPMs. Religiously adhering to these limits two-up would might result in lugging the engine which is much worse than using a little extra RPM. The bike will let you know when it is happy dealing with the load.

These things have a lot of leeway and it would be difficult to abuse a motor enough during break-in to lead to failure, but a little bit of extra care can result in an engine that runs a bit better or lasts a little longer.

I'd tend to agree with the comments above. One thought though, be absolutely sure YOU are comfortable with the bike (handling, braking, acceleration) Before you go two up. It's takes a few miles to get to "know" any new machine. Back many years ago when the Hurt report (motorcycle safety) came out I seem to remember that the most dangerous times on a motorcycle are the first 5k miles you ride and the first 1,500 miles on a new machine. Just a thought.....Enjoy your new ride and be safe. The ST is a great machine and that lady you're looking to carry on back will enjoy the ride more if You enjoy it/are comfortable with the machine. ::022::

Oldbear, I guess you are right. I have many miles under my belt but on a different breed of bike(supersport). I guess i should get used to this bike before I go 2up :)

I am just too excited to think straight :)

And that's exactly what I told her :)
Good on you! Once you are really comfortable on the machine you'll both enjoy it more and you'll feel much more confident hauling someone you care about on the back. Congrats on the new ride. Enjoy and Ride Safe!!

After riding alone for 200 miles and totally understanding the machine, I finally rode 2up for 25 miles. It was a blast and wife loved it.

I have rode 2up on a supersport and it was super uncomfortable for her :). The s10 is 1000 times better comfort wise !

I took a week's leave of my wife and put on 1000 miles. Watched rev limits, of course. Varied speeds a bit. And did the prescribed 600 mi. oil change at a different Yamaha dealer. Then came home, got the wife and went out for another week. You might want to read the thread about 2-up riding.
Good Luck,

Why at a diff dealer?

Also is labor free on first service?

I meant a different Yamaha dealer. I was hundreds of miles from home. You pay for the oil change. I changed oil and filter again at 2500 miles and put in Yamaha's 100% synthetic. Engine and rear end. Runs real smooth now.

I mean do you pay just for the parts or labor as well? So parts will cover oil and filter.

Dito on all the quotes of being comfortable with the bike before 2up. My wife kept asking me why I wouldn't take her for a ride. I just needed time to get comfortable and confident in the bike. I'm glad you've found the confidence like I did and that the wife liked it too.
