Anyone else have a similar problem? Found it this morning... :(

Just saw your post over on ADVrider, and guessed it was Two Brothers!

Btu it's really not that tough to guess. Unfortunately there is a reason Two Brothers pipes are often so inexpensive to purchase (and so loud)... Because they are usually not made nearly as well as so many other brands. And honestly, carbon fiber is not the best material to use as the canister of an exhaust system, even on race bikes where that kind of thing gets replaced more often. If you get it thick enough to stand the vibratory issues then it's heavier than more suitable metal materials, and if you get it thin enough to where it's lighter then you get the result you have. Rivets are not kind to carbon fiber, either.

Your best bet it replace it, and with a metal canister system. I like the stock muffler (and I may even have a spare one around here if you're interested), but if you want an aftermarket one my recommendation is either the Staintune or the Akrapovic. Both use a welded-on mounting bracket (rather than a thin metal band) for a mounting hanger, and both are made from the best materials for the job... Stainless for the Staintune, and titanium for the Akrapovic.

Just my two centavos... YMMV.

Agree on your points, and luckily I still have my stocker. Expected it to better than this though. It was a great buy on ADV. Guess it was nice while it lasted. :p

How old is it? Have you contacted Two Brothers to raise hell?

I'm sorry to see this, but I can't say I didn't expect it.

I tried to bring up carbon fiber as a "bad" material for exhaust cans on a v-twin (our crossplane parallel is close enough) due to the large firing pulses in the exhaust.

I blew apart a CF Yoshimura on my little SV650, I'm not surprised to see a CF can blown apart on the 1200cc Tenere.

You might as well pull the can apart at this point. I bet you'll find the packing pretty much shot.

Happened to mine after a year. I bitched at em enough to send me an aluminum can for free and haven't had an issue since.

Likewise I had heard of the issues with both the carbon fibre and titanium cans and I went for the stainless steel version and have had no issues so far.

What I like about the Akra CF mufflers is they are actually titanium with a sleeve of CF because they know CF alone won't hold up. No issues at all in the five years I used them on my TDM900.

Any contact info? I just checked their site, and found this:

"WARRANTY:
All Two Brothers Racing, Inc. exhaust systems(except carbon fiber canister sleeves, which hold no warranty) carry a limited 90 day warranty against defects in workmanship and/or materials..."

WARRANTY COVERAGE:
This warranty is provided to the original purchaser of the exhaust system from an authorized Two Brothers Racing re-seller. Warranty is non-transferable; no returns will be accepted from third parties.

It still wouldn't hurt to contact them. Two brothers used to sell great stuff. Anyone remember the RC30 kits they used to sell for the Honda Hawk, or the nickle plated full systems for the VFR? It would suck to be them if the motorcycle community decided that their current products are junk.

But it's quite a different company from what it was back then...

"Back in the day" Kevin and Craig Erion started the company based primarily on their race success with the Honda NT650 Hawk. Their little 650 Hawk's were giant killer in their time, and the "Two Brothers" deserved all the accolades they got. And for quite a while they prospered, both on the race track and in the marketplace. They did well racing in many other classes, and built some of the best products in the business. But then, as is often the case, the "Two Brothers" began to have some problems seeing eye-to-eye...

IIRC the story correctly, Kevin wanted to concentrate on racing, build only very high-quality products, and keep merchandizing and marketing in the background - just like they had been doing. OTOH, Craig wanted to do much more marketing, much more merchandising, have products produced off-shore to increase profit margins, brand other makers products (like their "Juice Boxes", which are re-branded old-tech, older model DynoJet PowerCommanders), and pretty much leave racing behind to concentrate on making as much money as possible. The rift between them became greater and greater, and they finally split up.

I'll leave it to you to guess which brother ended up with the company "Two Brothers", and which direction it went... ;)

Sad, too... Because they did make some truly wonderful stuff at one time. Now their stuff is pretty much "junk" IMHO, and their customer service is pretty crappy, too. I'd be willing to bet they don't do any real R&D anymore, and most all of their stuff is built off-shore by the lowest bidder.

But there is some good news... The brother who wanted to concentrate on racing, did, and started another company - "Erion Racing" - http://www.erionracing.com/

One look at his website and I think you can see the difference between "Erion Racing" and "Two Brothers". And note the brands of exhaust systems he carries... ::025::

Just FYI...

I had an Erion Racing full exhaust on my '99 VFR800, excellent performance and very high quality — never needed repacking. Funny story about that though. When I called years later to see if they were still making that exhaust, the person who answered swore they never made a full system for the VFR. ::) :D

For anyone with the same problem, here's an update. I was able to get a new canister from TBR, but opted for aluminum instead of carbon.

Went ahead and re-packed it while apart. What a pain in the ass! Don't have any pics of it installed, but will take some tonight.

umm, re-read Dallara's 1st posting on this subject.

You won't hafta worry about any re-packing if you'd just get a Staintune can.

YMMV
