I'm in the Sandhills, about an hour south of Raleigh. I've been up on the Parkway so many times now that I rarely get on it any more. I love riding out in western NC, where they have actual mountains and trees that aren't loblolly pines. I was just out that way this past summer on a trip.

I have always heard that the gas pumps we have in the states will give you almost a gallon of gas the grade of the last user of the pump . I have no idea if that is any where near correct. I can tell you this my YZ 250 is very very sensitive to gas. Even before they started putting corn in the gas I would put premium in my truck for a couple gallons and then mix my gas for the bike. If I didn't, down in the deep dark bottoms doing my best hard enduro act it would ping something terrible. So bad it scared me. It was way better if I put a couple gallons in the truck to get full premium. No not scientific but conclusive.

We’ve got a station with a pump that dispenses nothing but premium non ethanol so as not to mix it with the ethanol lower octane stuff. I’ve got a carbed dr650 that is sensitive to fuel also. The pump efi fuel is not what was available decades ago me believes.

I'm a firm believer that it's true. All that fuel in the line is going to be what was last pumped. And I have to assume that 99.99% of the time, it will be regular grade. That's why I let my tank get down to reserve before I fill. Of the five gallons I put in, at least four will be premium.

Everything I've ever heard or read by experts claim it is about 1/3 of a gallon, the amount left in the hose, however long that is. Of course, it is still better going to a dedicated pump, if one can be found. There are none in my area, that's for sure.
