Hello All,

I am in the market for my first adventure motorcycle.

I am currently on my second motorcycle, kawasaki zx6r. I had been reading about adventure touring since past several months now and finally have decided to sell my supersport and enter the adventure world.

I definitely don't want to go the bmw 1200 gs route but my two strong contenders are the 2014 VStrom 1000 and the Yamaha Super tenere.
I test rode the VStrom and I liked it.

Today I went to the yamaha dealership and sat on a 2014 Super tenere and a 2013 that they have. I liked the feel and ergonomics of it. The bike will definitely have more power than the VStrom since it has 200cc more. I plan to test ride the 2013 tenere in couple of weeks.

Now here are my questions:

1) The dealership has a 2013 that is listed for 11,770 and OTD is around $15k, the owner also told me that he will give me a smoking deal coz they want the bike to go. My question is, is there a huge mechanical difference between the 2013 and 2014 models ? apart from the ES and the cruise control?

2) The 2013 model also comes with $1200 worth of free accessories so what would be the must have accessories that one should get ?

3) I started motorcycling on a Yamaha VStar 650 cruiser and then switched to the kawi zx6r supersport. This would be my first adventure dual sport bike... so is the tenere a good choice or it would be too much of a bike for me ? btw, I am very new to offroad motorcycling.

4) looking at the base price of 11770, what should be the OTD on a 2013 model? The current OTD proposed to me has fright and assembling charges as well.... the reason I am asking is to just get an idea.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum, flyby

The Vstrom would likely be give/take when you're on hardball roads, but beyond that the S10 is a complete upgrade once the pavement ends. I felt that the S10 was an overall more refined bike and liked the shaft drive/low maintenance aspect of not having to clean/lube a chain anymore.

If electronic suspension and integrated electronic cruise are big factors to you, then the '14 is the way to go. But a properly flashed/tuned and moderately farked to your needs '13 makes the bike what everyone here seems to rave about (myself included). The $1200 is a good deal, so snag some luggage or heated grips with it, IMO. skip the "gravel guard" skid plate and crash bars - altrider or rumbux would be my choices for aftermarket depending on how offroad you imagine yourself taking it as you grow comfortable (and you likely will)

You won't be overwhelmed coming off a super sport to the S10 if you're comfortable at stops with it (it is a taller bike, after all)

I'd shoot for no more than MSRP out the door (OTD is including whatever extraneous charges like freight/assembly/tax/title & license). Offer something lower without lowballing him to see how bad he wants the floorspace...

Four weeks ago I purchased a new '13 for $10,500 plus tax/title/license. No set up fees, no freight and it included the $1200 worth of Yamaha extras and extra YES warranty. You "Should" be able to get a new '13 for less than $12k OTD. If not, keep shopping! Deals are out there and the dealers are wanting to move the bikes. The whole "freight/setup" thing is bogus and NOT something that a dealer has to charge you. You may have to travel a little, but that's OK. Do a fly n buy where you get the deal and ride 'er home! I LOVE my '13 and would highly recommend IF you can get the price right on it. Good luck!

That's a good point, OTD <= MSRP is a good target for a new model bike, but on a year old model that isn't exactly marketed to fly off the showroom floor, you can do a lot better.

Base price of $11,770 + tax & license would be a fair out the door price, especially considering the $1,200 Yamaha incentive.
Without knowing your tax rate, and license fees, it's difficult to quote a fair OTD price, but $11,770 plus the gov't fees would have you ending up with a good deal.

You got a very good deal. Well below dealer cost. Some bikes were sold to dealers under an incentive program around the price you paid, but at most dealers, your price is below their cost.

Without knowing the OP's tax rate, it's difficult to say that $12k OTD is realistic.

15k otd is outrageous
I don't know what the tax rate is in WA on vehicles but in NC it's 3%
So 11770 x 1.03 is 12123 + tag & title (can't be more than a few hundred)
And if a dealer is trying to get rid of something he's gonna forget about freight and dealer prep

Don't get cornholed

Where I am, tax is 8.5%, so close enough to the OP tax rate. I was at $12,500 OTD. I think now you can do a bit better, but that should be a good point of reference. Certainly, anything over $12,500 OTD is too much.

Any suggestions on must have accessories for the $1200?
Heated grips, taller screen, boxes... that should eat it all up.
A pretty 2012 is in our Sale folder, awesome price, great fly and ride in Utah.

I'm going to have a low miles, extended warranty, farkled up 2013 for sale. I've already bought a 2014 so I'm a motivated seller. I'm on the road with it right now but should have it ready for the new owner in a couple of weeks. Title I hand by the way.

Oh wow, that's great deal.:)
I thought so, which is why I bought the S10. Dealer was Lee's in Harrodsburg, KY. Talk to Derrick or Mark, I dunno if they could find you a '13 or not, but if I was looking for anything from Yamaha, Suzuki, or Kawasaki they would be my first choice! I've been riding since '67 and NEVER had a better buying experience or felt I got a better deal!!!! (And what a ride you'd get going back home!!! ::015::

Flyby, I bought my 13 super Tenere yesterday from the dealer with $1200 in accessories. I bought skid plate, back luggage, PIAA fogs, and tank bag. Out the door price $11400 and I got Yamaha financing 3.49 for 84 months.

The msrp is 11770 and 8.5% tax. Plus assembly and freight charges. Plus licensing fees, comes out to be that much.
