I hit 2 months and 2000 miles today. I love the bike and wanted offer my thoughts so far.
Except for test riding a Stelvio and a GSA, I've only ridden Harleys. By comparison, this bike is the best I've ever ridden. It handles great, it runs smooth, it's great in traffic, and the TC has kept my ass scab free at least once due to hitting a patch of ice. Most of the positive things I've read about the bike, I can't really offer a comment. It's only been off road a few miles. I've only changed the oil once. And if the clutch switch mod made any change I couldn't really tell. Coming off an 8 year old Harley felt like I was on a rocket, so if you say I have 15 more HP, then I'll take your word on it. Every time I press the ignition I get excited, and I've never gotten off because I wanted to. I love riding this bike.
With that, I have to offer my complaints. I do not have a single complaint about the performance of this bike. Every complaint is entirely superficial, cosmetic and none of them are significant enough to make me doubt that this was the best purchase I've ever made. So, please allow me to vent, then tell me to ride more, worry less. So here goes:
From front to rear. I hate the space under the headlights. It looks to me like the engineers were so determined not to add a beak that the simply did nothing. A great big empty space full of nothing. I prefer it over the enormous, protruding, member sticking off the front of the new 1200GS, but only slightly.
Why in the hell does the left side of my bike look different than the right? There are 4 pieces to the engine cover. All four are different. The engineers were able to design this bike so that every friggin bolt can be changed with 3 allen wrenches, but didn't have enough foresight to make the engine covers match. Assuming the left side air intake is that size to assist the radiator, what the hell sense does it make to make the right side a different size? If I could magic one farkle on my bike it would be a matching right side. Tabasco says he can make anything we can think up. Well I'll pay top dollar for that one.
I don't care what Yamaha says. The OEM side cases are plastic. One day I'm going to take one apart just to see how the aluminum is attached, and if I find out it's just big aluminum sticker on the outside of a plastic case I'm going to be pissed. Aluminum case reinforced with plastic my ass.
Last thing. These aren't complaints, but I wish the side cases were a little bigger, and supported a little better. I also wish the lower engine covers were made of a more rubberized/rugged plastic.
With all that being said, I do love this bike. All complaints fade away the second I hop on and head down my street. Cosmetically, there is a lot of room for improvement, but in every other aspect she is a 10!

That big space is for lights. Lots of lights.. ::024::

Um, I can see the reasons that YAMAHA have a big ass vent on one side (radiator) and a little one on the other side (reg / rectifier cooling).

I can see why they have big holes on one side (lets the air out) and none on the other (stops water getting all over the electrics)

They could have put a big ass vent on both sides. Then it would look like a VMAX ADV and people would wonder why they made it look like a poor mans VMAX.

Rule No 1. It either looks like a copy of something or it doesn't. I am glad you noticed it wasn't a copy unlike 1000 internet riders when the bike was launched.

I too would love to know where all the weight is hidden seeing there is so much plastic on the bike. Lots of things mentioned in manuals about weight savings. I think I will just be thankful for that.

And I hate to break this to you but the bags are plastic with aluminium stuck to it. :D

Well said, CB, specially that "...never gotten off because I wanted to" bit. Great description of the riding experience. I thought the asymmetric covers were odd but never noticed it till 6 months of ownership and once you start putting bars, lights, whatever those holes become less of a focal point. Perhaps the tool pouch area is there, not sure but the left side is larger for the rad. As for the space under the headlights, Yamaha left us a nice spot to fit some spots. Easy as pie. Or, Touratech has a piece of plastic for 2 bills to trim up the nose. Your call.

Surprised you didn't notice much change with the clutch mod. T-Mode on my bike is very boggy off idle and made pulling into traffic sketchy. The mod makes much more linear power and feels quicker off the line to me so I use it on pavement. Offroad, the T-Mode works great and allows the rear tire to stay hooked up rather than engaging the TC.

A lot of the things I read about the bike I have to take at face value because of my limited range of experience. I chalk the clutch mod up to that. This bike smokes my Harley in any mode.
I bookmark a lot of the posts from more experienced riders so if I get a chance to use their advice I have it handy.
And Graham confirmed one thing I love most about this bike. Every piece and part has been engineered for a specific purpose. The longer I own it the more I find that to be true. Mismatched engine covers and all.

Fill the void with the Rigid 6" Specter - I'm lovin' this mod.

Make sure the clutch mod is correctly plugged in...simply start the bike in gear. If it turns, and moves, you've got it right.

The right side / left side are for the reasons that Graham stated. i wouldn't screw with this.
Besides - you only see one side of the bike at one time anyway...right??

YMMV

Ditto, but now the headlights look almost yellow. Oh well, looks like its time to add HID lighting to even everything out. ::013::
I upgraded the headlight bulbs with the PIAA ones, very bright clean(white) light.. I got two of them on Amozon for the price of one compared to what the local Yamaha dealer wanted.. Think it was $38 for both-

Can we see a night picture with the LED bar lights on and how you hooked it up?

I am a long time HD owner as well, but have always had multiple brands at once.

The big difference here is function over form. HD is very much form over function. I love the mismatched look! I also appreciate symmetry...

If you are into motorcycle road racing, or at least pay attention to it, you will see the mismatched thing becoming art and "in style". On race bikes, regardless of the color scheme, the forks are gold because Ohlins are the best. The brakes are another color because that is what Brembo was coating them with. The levers are another color, the rearsets yet another because Woodcraft made them that color... All the best components are their own color and that mismatch becomes the style because those are the BEST parts available. Now we are seeing this as the style on newer bikes... Cool look IMHO...

Why does everyone hate on plastic? It's wonderful stuff!

I'm not hating on plastic used appropriately. So far on the S10 it seems to be used appropriately and no where else.
In fact, textiles are making a comeback.

If all you need to do is direct air over something..It's probably the better choice.

Before I added the Baja Designs Squadron LED's under my stock headlamps.. I completely agreed that the front end looked like they had "done nothing"

I'm going to follow suit here and recommend you get some nice lights to mound under there, you will see that it finishes up the look perfectly.

I too am one of the people that did not notice the side panels were not symmetrical until like 6 months of ownership.

I'm about to complete my first year of ownership and will be making a similar post to this soon with my findings :)

::026:: That's what I was thinking as I read about the cosmetic dissatisfaction. Must be a challenge going from a bike that people spend hours cleaning and polishing, to a bike that looks best with dirt on it. Not much in common between the two different worlds. Don't worry cb0802, as you learn how capable this bike is you'll grow to appreciate it more and more, even the look.

Welcome, nice to have another Northern Virginia S10 guy in the area.

I thought about getting some PIAA or Silverstars and go with that, but Santa Claus brought me some HID lights. . . Now if I can find time to put them in. . .
