Guys

Can any of the Canadians help me here??

I'm coming from the east coast but once I reach Edmonton, am I better off going north on 43 to Dawson Creek? ::007:: ::008::

or

Going west on 16 towards Hinton and then follow 40 north to Grand Cache and then continue on 40 north until Grande Prairie where I pick up 43 again towards Dawson Creek? ::007:: ::008::

Which one is more scenic? :)

Thanks
I would go through Calgary and over to Banff. Then up the Park to Jasper.... then over to Hinton and north. ::001::

Of the two choices you mentioned, the Hinton route is going to be more scenic.

I'll be heading north from Rocky Mountain House on Hwy 22 and picking up Hwy 43 at Mayerthorpe, then Grande Prairie, Dawson Creek, etc. But then I live here and the Icefields Parkway is in my backyard. If you want gravel, take the Forestry Trunk Road as was suggested, but it will be slow going and it's not going to be fun if there's any rain. You can get on the south end near Canmore or pick it up west of Nordegg and just take the north section.

The Icefields Parkway is a major scenic attraction and it would be a good idea to go from Banff North all the way through to Jasper, Hinton, Grand Cache, Grand Prairie but there's also the option to head for Rocky Mountain House and take the David Thompson Highway - Hwy 11 through Nordegg to North Saskatchewan River Crossing, then north to Jasper from there. Hwy 11 and the Icefields Parkway is an awesome route for scenery and still takes you over the Columbia Icefield. Both these routes are asphalt.

I'm taking the direct route as I don't have the luxury of time and I'll be travelling two-up. If you have time definitely take the Icefields Parkway one way or the other.

North Saskatchewan River Crossing

David Thompson Highway

David Thompson Highway - Abraham Lake

I'm in the same boat SuperTen, undecided on what route to take. I am looking to head to Calgary then take Forestry Trunk rd 40 north then make my way to Dawson Creek. Camping most of the way. Might leave around June 7th.

http://g.co/maps/35mxd Here is a route. Sorry for the via points. Had to use them to persuade GoogleMaps.

If you average 808 km a day you can make it in 7 days. If you have the time you can take 37 and 16 on the return trip while including Jasper and Banff. You might want to drop into Montana and enjoy Glacier Nat'l Park.

I would like to talk to you about your trip since I would consider using it to get to Calgary.

After much research (too much, probably), here's the route I'm taking from northern Minnesota to Dawson. I won't be in a big hurry and Google says no highways. Also, I really want to get out to some of our Parks also, either there or on the way back. ::26::

Yikes, if I pasted that URL correctly, that's the longest one I've seen. ::010::

Tomatocity, if that route you posted isn't too strict and you get closer to Duluth, keep me in mind for a free campsite.

Good route - but gets a little touristy around Banff and Jasper. But the icefield parkway is AWESOME!!!

Alright, I did it. I signed up for the 1st North American Super Tenere gathering!! This next month is going to be busy but I think it is all going to pay off.

The first 10 days of my trip will be in Utah with 9 friends doing the Utah Backcountry Discovery Route, UTBDR. Our group will stay in Boise June 23rd where I plan to then brake off and head north, and then north and north and well you all get the picture.

I look forward to meeting everyone.

We might be in the same area since I should be leaving the Seattle area on the 24th and scheduled to arrive Whitehorse on the 29th.

So who is planning to go up the western route in BC through Dease Lake, etc? I've never been that way and plan to try it for the trip up.

Sort of settled on: Leave Loveland on the 25th, that night in Gillette WY, next night in Missoula MT, next night in Vernon BC, next night in Vanderhoof BC, next night in Iskut BC and into Whitehorse on Saturday the 30th. Probably try to camp to save on expenses, unless the route/timing works out to maybe share motels with others.

I'm flexible though on departure date and stopping points.

Rod is this close to your route?

Too bad we will be a day a apart. I will be leaving St Edward SHP on the 24th and probably crossing at Oroville on the 25th and arriving Whitehorse on the 29th. I might steal your Canadian night-over stops.

Hmmm, we may need to talk. My schedule is certainly flexible by a day or two. What is your route to the border crossing and what day do you expect to be there?

Thanks Tim, I'm having a hell of a time trying to decide on the route to take. The wife and I have seen more of the USA than or own country so i was going to go through the northern part of Ontario taking my time camping. Then through the flat lands of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. That is probably the most boring route i could take. Or head over to Glacier National Park and a stay over in Waterton Lakes National Park, then North.

This is better!

I always enjoy going over Snowy Range and the Bighorns, but I typically try to avoid Yellowstone due to all the campers and looky-loos.
