10000 miles and half way.

Six weeks ago I brought my S10 over from Australia and started my two up adventure around North America. My wife and I started our trip in Portland with our fully loaded Tenere and over the last 5 weeks we have put on over 10,000 miles. From Portland we traveled north to Hyder Alaska and then onto Haines before heading north to Fairbanks. The highlights of the area had to be the Dalton highway, Telegraph Creek, Nabesna Road, Denali Highway and the Top of World Highway. We were planning to travel the Campbell Highway and the South Canol road but the forecast of some extreme weather kept us off of these roads. After Alaska we headed east across north central Canada and down into North Dakota and across to Wisconsin. We are now taking some time off in Sheboygan visiting family before heading south to Arkansas and then across Texas and New Mexico before heading north through Utah,Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and finally back to Portland to send the bike back home to Australia.

The S10 has handled everything that we had come across with the exception of a rather wide river crossing at the end of the Nabesna Road. We encountered some extreme dirt and mud roads along with miles and miles of rock and sand and the Tenere pulled through everything. It also handled some extreme wet weather with ease.

I had an issue with the rear brake that it stopped working completely shortly into our ride. It seems that with the bike fully loaded I would put my leg over differently and the heal of my boot kicked the brake line loose and I lost al the fluid. I was lucky enough to come across a custom bike shop in Smithers B. C. , and he had the bike back on the road with in 30 minutes. Greats service from Eye Candy Custom Bikes, considering he was closed for lunch and opened up for us and then set us up with some accommodation for the night along with off road riding suggestions in the area and then a barbecue and beers after he closed for the day.

The Tenere has been a great ride and we are looking forward to hitting the road again in the next week, we are planning to do another 4000miles before returning to Australia.

Re: 10000 miles and half way.

Wow!

That's a lot of countryside you guys have covered.

And you have a pretty nice list of states on your to-do list.

You left off Colorado. :)
I've lived in Texas all my life and you won't find a bigger defender. It's an amazing "way of life".

But as far as Adventure riding goes, this massive state can run your clocks up more than the state deserves. I'd swap some of them Texas miles for Rocky mountain miles, no questions asked.

There's a good reason why 100 Teneres all met in Ouray! :)

Cheers

Great trip
I checked out that Nabesna road, I wish we would have known about that one when we were up there.
Are you coming through Iowa? I'd like to ride along for a while.

Great trip and excellent report! I love hearing of shops helping riders back on to the road. Kinda renews my faith in humankind. There are nice people wherever you go.

Awesome trip. If your heading through Texas you might as well go through hill country and ride the three sisters. Otherwise skip Texas and visit Colorado instead.

Thought that I would answer a few of the questions about shipping my S10 from Australia to the U.S.

I shipped the bike through a company called Get Routed, they are based in Melbourne and do world wide shipping of bikes.
The cost of the shipping was $3200 round trip from Sydney to Portland. The trip took about five weeks from drop off to pick up.
There was no packing of the bike just had to remove the panniers and have them wrapped in bubble wrap. Pick up was done in a large warehouse with plenty of room to put the panniers back on and to pack them before heading off. They let you bring your suitcase to the warehouse and will hold them until you return.

There were a few forms to fill out and the ones from the E.P.A were the most difficult but we had alot of help from the brooker the shipping company was using. These forms did not take too much effort and the whole thing was so much easier then shipping yourself. I shipped myself about five years ago and would never do it again. We are riding on our australian registered plates and have not been questioned about it at all. We did have to get insurance from a U.S. company which was quite expensive.

Not carnet were needed and we are allowed to keep it in the country for up to one year and to ride on our Autralian license for that time.

We will be heading out from Wisconsin in about five days and would appreciate any advise on our way back to Portland.

First off, congrats on the epic ride and welcome!

A few suggestions coming out of Wisconsin....

South Dakota...Badlands

Colorado...Rocky Mountain National Park, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Ouray to Silverton to Durango, and surrounding area.

Utah...Canyonlands Nat Park, Arches Nat Park.

Wyoming/Idaho...Grand Tetons, Yellowstone.

Montana...Glacier Park (going to the sun road).

These are some of the "marquee" locations along your route, but as others have said it could be just as fun to go get lost in Colorado for a few days. Either way you've got a lot of good riding ahead of you. Good luck!
