Greetings. New member here from west of Atlanta Georgia. I’m called Steve and I went today to look at a 2012 S10 as y’all refer to them. Beautiful bike with not quite 14k, equipped with Jesse panniers but otherwise completely stock. New tires and battery. A little over an hour ride, nice enough guy with a great garage/workshop and he wants me to see a cold start. It cranks over fine but will not start! He feels terrible that I rode all that way for nothing and I get it but what can you do? Last thing we both could have predicted.

Search "hard start" here in the forums, not a common issue but not uncommon either. Seems to happen to many of us at some point in the ownership experience....easy enough fix: pull fuel pump fuse and crank until she pops off, put fuse back in, and fire it up. It gets flooded, washes down cylinders resulting in loss of compression, will NOT start at that point. The throttle plates are activated by a solenoid, so the old trick of holding it WFO and cranking to clear a flooded cylinder doesn't work on these bikes.

Don't write this one off just yet!

Sorry it didn’t pan out, but kudos to the seller for his desire to have you experience a true cold start - he was probably very confident that it would be fine, as it likely always is.

Curious - does that make it a hard and final 'no' for you, or would you consider it afresh at a later time?

Super Tenere hard start issues are way to common but unfortunately Yamaha likes to ignore it and pretend it doesn’t happen.
What kind of battery did that 2012 Tenere have ? I highly recommend switching to a lithium battery.

. . . . It cranks over fine but will not start! . . . .
A possibility is that the self-diagnostic was interrupted. If the starter button was pressed before the self-diagnostic finishes, it often won't start.

Uh, that's how I get mine started, when I interrupt the self-diagnostic.

I’ve had it happen about 5 times n 10 years. Started carrying a jumper pack. Don’t leave home without it. I also tried to induce a hard start at home after the last one on the road. Cycled the key at least 10-15 times and couldn’t do it. Yamaha turned its head on this known problem. It wouldn’t stop me from getting one though.

Usually means that the battery is not up to proper voltage to fire the injectors. I had mine crank over fine but not start. Charged battery it started fine. Battery sat for a week and same thing again. New lithium battery and never had a problem since. Starts up real well.

My 13 model started doing the hard/no start thing and just dying for no reason. I put a new battery in and no more problems. A weak battery will turn the engine over, but screws the system up.

I wonder if the Gen 1 is more susceptible to a weak battery. 'Cuz, my '17 had a 6yr old battery that was weak as hell. Slow cranking, but no hard start, (unless I interrupted the self-diagnostic) and definitely no dying.
