    spokes

Too many broken spokes to count., but the count is north of 20. These are just the one that weren't left on the road or trail They are always broken in the same place and always on the rear, both drive side and brake side, rear only, never front. I've tried torquing to spec, torquing a little...

what's an alternative front to go with a K60 rear?

I run the Shinko R's now and run them hard with no issues, but I only get about 3500 miles out of a rear and about 5000 miles on the front. In contrast, I got 8000 miles out of the K60 rear in 10,000 on the K60 front. After several sets of Shinko's and Hidenau's as I prefer the Shinko's. The...

    Yamaha's response to "Hard Start"

Re: Yamaha's response to "Hard Start" This hard starting problem is a bigger problem on the S 10 than any other vehicle that I am aware of. Every vehicle that I have owned over the last 5 to 10 years is fuel injected and none of them have had this problem except the Super Tenere. It's...

    Chattooga River

The Ocoee is better IMHO. The Ocoee almost continuous action, while the Chattooga is pools and drops. Also, the Ocoee is dam fed, while the Chattooga is not. Therefore, if it hasn't rained in a while, the Chattooga will suck. Both can be gnarly, but the Chattooga is slightly more gnarly, so the...

    Hard start has me thinking

Hard start has me thinking Apparently you're just not living right. I drive cars and motorcycles too and I've never experienced this problem with any of them except the Super Tenere.

    Picked up an FJR1300 today

I love the S10, but I do miss my FJR. I miss the power and the electric wind screen the most, but the FJR sucks on gravel. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

    Clutch Basket Remove/Upgrade/Installation

Make sure you turn the last clutch plate 1 opening, or 2 notches, not 1 notch like I did. Amazingly, the S10 will actually move with only 1 clutch plate engaged. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

    spokes

Loose spokes ? 35+K miles on my 2012 and I've replaced at least 10 or 12 broken spokes, all on the rear. They always break where the spoke bends to go through the wheel. I check tightness frequently and true the wheel every tire change. The rear spokes are a real problem IMHO.

I live 30 minutes from Fort Mountain. Love that area, it's my playground.

    spokes - need advice

The manual says to torgue the spokes at 6N-M and that's what I do. 6N-m is not very tignt, just a little more than hand tight. How tight do you tighten yours?

    spokes - need advice

I broke another one today. It's the first one to break without zip ties, but it is possible that the zip ties fatugued the spoke while they were on and it gave way today while under stress. I have a KTM 450 for the technical stuff. I ride the Tenere almost exclusively 2-up, about 60% street and...

    spokes - need advice

All of mine have been broken at the flange. I haven't kept count, but I've probably replaced 10 by now, all on the rear. The most I've had at once is 3. I never broke a spoke until I zip tied them, but I did loose the nuts off of 2 spokes prior to zip tieing them. I replaced 3 broken spokes...

    spokes - need advice

Duh! I just realized that the spokes will slide on the inner hub under compression so compression of the spoke is impossible. My apologies Mark. Perhaps the zip ties bind the spoke causing it to break. I just know that when I put zip ties on my spokes, I broke a lot of spokes. Before zip...

    spokes - need advice

I understand that the spokes should stay in tension. What I am saying is that the S10 wheels are seeing compressive loads on the spokes and that is why they frequently come loose and break. Perhaps the wheels aren't strong enough or the spoke tension is too low.

    spokes - need advice

You're the expert Mark, but 6 N-m of torque, which is the Yamaha specified torque for the spokes (check your manual), will not generate thousands of pounds of tension. I promise you that the spokes are often under a compression load.

    spokes - need advice

I'm a mechanical engineer and I say that you are wrong. The spokes do flex and putting a zip tie in the middle shortens the radius about which they flex by half, essentially making them much stiffer. Increased stiffness means decreased flex. I could give you the formula to calculate the flex but...

    spokes - need advice

Zip ties are probably okay if you don't tighten them up. My theory is that if they are tight they create more stress on the spokes by not allowing them to flex properly and break the flaired ends off. Loose zip ties won't keep them from loosening, but I guess they might keep them from flopping...

    spokes - need advice

Take the zip ties off immediately. I put zip ties on mine because I got tired of them coming loose. Everything was great for a while, then they started breaking. At first it was 1 or 2 at a time, later it became 3 or 4 at a time. I cut all of the zip ties off and so far, no more broken spokes...
