Rear End / Final Drive Oil

Echo that. A hypoid drive requires shaft oil that is slightly on the acid side. This is apparently needed to maintain a certain "roughness" between the gears. You can actually smell it - the right oil has a sour stink to it ;) Thomas

What do we now think of the bike

I have a bit of a weak spot for underdogs. Maybe this is the reason why, being a German and living in the BMW hometown of Munich, I decided against a GS last year and bought a new 2014 XT1200ZE. Ironically, I did not have any real opportunities for my typical motorcycle trips to the Alps since...

Why do you think this is not a 'young' buyers bike? Tends to be an older custome

    1 Husqvarna Strata Owners Story

Yes, you are right: The Nuda is very comparable to the Ducati Hypermotard. I owned a KtM 990 SM before the Nuda, and I have to admit that the KTM was the benchmark in this segment. A bit of Nuda tuning changed this, of course ;)

Why do you think this is not a 'young' buyers bike? Tends to be an older custome

Just stumbled over this thread so please excuse me for pulling this up. I could not agree more with this statement. It is the quality of total package and the many things that are done well in places where the causal user will never look at that make the difference. I always liked Yamahas...

    1 Husqvarna Strata Owners Story

It is all a shame, really. It is a shame what happened to the Husky workers in the Italian plant after BMW dropped the brand. It is a shame that Husqvarna owners were essentially left on their own devices. It is a shame what happened to the Nuda, a truly brillant motorcycle. In Germany, we are...

    REFLASH Report, sort of.

I had a re-flash done on my '14 ES. Living in Germany, this was done by Off-The-Road (www.off-the-road.de) ... typical German company name ;) They are well-respected ST specialists here. The re-flash was done immediately after the first service at 1.000km. My riding experience since then was...

2014 ES : how do you use your electronic suspension

I admit I had been a bit sceptical about the electronic suspension, but decided to give it a try and bought the '14 ES. My riding is mainly in the Italian Alps. Getting there involves some German Autobahn and A-roads. On the less-frequented passes, the tarmac often is in quite a desolate...

    Oh Shiiiit…………again!

Very sorry to hear this, I certainly hope you can sort out things with the insurace. When a similar thing happened to me last year, lying in the hospital I had plenty of time for similar thoughts. I will spare you my mental back-and-forth on whether I should stop riding our not. As soon as I...

Would you still buy a pre-2014 model.

In my opinion, you cannot go wrong with a generation 1 model, they come by cheap and - as stated in previous posts - have no real issues. Imho the most significant change of the 2014 model is in the engine department. The claimed difference in power output is a mere two hp. The actual...

@Brick: I personally think the way you want to do it is the best way to discover the Alps. A friend of mine from the Boston area is doing exactly what you are thinking of: He flies over to Munich and we rent a bike for him locally. Most local dealers like BMW, Triumph and Kawasaki offer bike...

Hi Dogdaze, Thank you for your welcome. The trip you describe is indeed quite a mouthful for a day - I take it the Umbrail still is unpaved towards the top. I had the ECU re-programmed at Off The Road (www.off-the-road.de). Regards, Thomas

Greetings, all! I finally registered after lurking around for a couple of weeks. I got my '2014 S10 in August and have taken it to the Italian Alps a couple of times so far. Great bike, quite a different ride compared to my Husqvarna Nuda, but probably the best thing for the mountain passes...
