I too am curious as I'm not sure what its real purpose is either. I don't see one on the right side. It could simply be a general purpose bungee point or something. I was thinking about the helmet, but that could get a bit tedious if the bike is on the side stand. Enquiring minds want to know!

If it's placed in front of the case instead to the side like mine, then it would appear the case is for a different make/model/year. Just a guess.

I hope you get it sorted out and fixed prior to your trip. Maybe someone else will chime in and offer a fix before you leave. I'm having trouble wrapping my mind around the piece being perpendicular to the stay. Are you able to post a pic?

This is how the lower left-side bracket looks like with the case attached.

The left OEM case is only meant for the left side (if I understand you correctly). Mine were put on by the dealer three weekends ago and I watched him do it. I'll send a pic very shortly.

As noted in a previous post, these little screws require a t10 anti-tamper torx bit. I had a ridiculous time and failed trying to use something else.
