I searched for what I thought would have been a well worn thread, so apologies in advance if I missed it.....

I picked up my Yamaha factory cases today from the dealer who would not include installing them in my sale. Not doing a top case at this time.

Is there anything tricky? Advice? Or point me to the right place.

Thanks!

Yamaha side cases - installation

I just installed mine two weeks ago. Pretty easy. You will need a set of "safety star bits". I got a set at home depot, but it didn't have one large enough. I found a more complete set at auto zone. Other then the need for new tools, the instructions were very clear. I'm a little dense so I had to read everything twice. I must admit though, mine came out just fine.

Personally I didn't bother buying the safety torx screwdriver to fit the screws - just cut slots with a hacksaw and used a regular screwdriver. Who's going to steal your locks when they're locked inside the panniers anyway? Put thread locker on the screws though.

My 2 cents worth.

+1 Make sure you locktite the the small screws when you install the locks, they will fall out otherwise!

Excellent advice.

I'm an IT guy so I always read everything 3 times and back it up twice. If it's like an IT project something will still go wrong.

Maybe I missed the explanation..

But what is with the head on the back long bolt for the railing. It has a star formation with a little round metal rod protrusion in the middle of the head. Obviously a special tool?

I think the proper name is tamper proof Torx - They're available pretty much everywhere. the Torx bit has a hole in the center obviously. Don't remember the size it takes though.

I have applied loctite twice to those pesky little lock Screws and they still work loose. I gave up and just make a habit of checking them often now. Very poor design IMO.

Check for cracks, my two panniers were cracked right out of the cardboard boxes. Went back and my Yamaha dealer replaced both, left and right, I don't have the top box.

Re: Yamaha side cases - installation Ugh

Well the cases weren't cracked but I had to hunt all over town to find a $&%^# Torx "anti tamper" bit BIG enough for that &%^#% back long bolt. Of course is was only in a $40 set at Sears. The little one for the locks was $1.67 at Ace.
